Well young'un back in my day when we went to concerts and we're connecting with some deep shit in a ballad tune, we'd all hold up our cigarette lighters in unison. We all had cigarette lighters on us because we also were all smoking cigarettes back then, and we liked it!
Nowadays you young'uns are too soft to smoke a pack a day, so you never carry lighters with you. Instead you hold up your phone screen and to get a similar albeit lamer effect.

I’ve also seen it done with a phone’s “flashlight” feature.

I always thought that holding up lighters thing was a movie thing.
People really did that? That's weird. But then again so is taking videos of things that are happening instead of actually watching what it happening.
