His skin at least is in the National Science Museum

According to Wikipedia, his remains were cremated and left to rest next to his owner, but his fur was stuffed. So I guess they skinned him after he died?

Imagine doing this with famous people. "This is Abraham Lincoln. If you look closely you can see the wound. Who wants a selfie with the late president?"

Why though? Just because it had a name doesn't make it more important than the cow that makes up my leather wallet in my opinion

I can tell you that the dog does have a spot dedicated to him next to his master's grave. I went to see it when I was in Tokyo. It's rather small and easily missed but it has quite a few gifts left in front of it (and nothing else put in front of his master's grave right next to him.)

It's important for pets to see their owners and other pets in the house after they die for this situation. They are emotional beings as well. I remember when my first dog died, before we buried him our other dog came up, sniffed at him a few times then walked off. He still mourned, for weeks he would just lay on top of the grave, but he wasn't left wondering what had happened to his buddy.

Would I go to a museum to see someone elses beloved pet? NO
They should have buried it with the owner and made a replica of it. Like madamme tussauds does

A Japanese TV show interviewed a bunch of people who knew Hachiko. They all said that the story about waiting for the owner was an embellishment.
The entrance he waited next to was next to a yakitori restaurant and the patrons used to give him some. He was just begging for food.
They even did an autopsy of the dog and he had a bunch of bamboo sticks (used to skewer the chicken in yakitori) in his stomach.
