Bowl Games are post season, and are not pre scheduled. These games where already scheduled, and moved to Tokyo.

Also, huge money makers. All College Football is at this level but for example the payout for the Rose Bowl and Orange is 35 million dollars. Sugar and Fiesta are 17 million. So massive money for one game and schools try as hard as possible to qualify and win the biggest ones.

There are other regular season games referred to as bowl games, usually due to some traditional rivalry. For instance the annual Alabama/Auburn game is called the Iron Bowl.
