If you were a kid who heard about this during that time, you were certain that this is how you were going to die.

AFRICANIZED BEES. I read about them in my Weekly Reader.

Yes. They were sold as being basically infinite in number, attacking without provocation, and will mindlessly pursue you for miles until you and everyone you love is dead

Yes! I still tell this story from time to time. There was a significant period of my childhood where I was sure the killer bee "invasion" would continue to spread and would be a serious problem for the country. I remember seeing the maps and everything.

Still scared to death of bees, and now that I think of it it's probably because of this.

Ha-ha, we've killed off most of the bees, so we don't have to worry about them any more!

As I was reading, I was hoping the 10 ft tall statue was of Viggo Mortenson on a mustang.

It sucks though because apparently 90% of that story is utter bullshit but ya know what? Don't give a fuuuq

It might happen more if you told people what it was called instead of dancing around it.

Almost no response.

It's not always like that - usually around the Christmas season.

If you are walking along and a bee starts to ram into you there is a definite possibility that it is an Africanized bee. They warn you off before they swarm you.

If you thought Africanized Honey Bees were bad, wait until you hear about the giant Asian hornet, sometimes referred to as “the murder hornet.” These guys can grow up to 2 inches (2.5 cm) and can take out entire honeybee hive in a matter of hours.

Here is a link to a short video about them. Go to the 2:50 mark to get an understanding of just how massive these guys are

Note: the giant Asian hornet is NOT a bee. Hornets and bees are related, but they are not the same.

Everyone knows, they were all over the news last year and it was all everyone was talking about.

danceswithsteers t1_itoed9h wrote

AFAIK, they were not "released"; they escaped.

A Brazilian scientist was studying them and trying to improve the honey production of non-Africanized bees.

BTW Hidalgo was a Mexican Catholic Priest born from Spanish parents that started the Mexican Independence from Spain, when that part of Texas was still part of Mexico...
