It was erected in 1992 to commemorate Hidalgo as the first American city to be invaded by an aggressive strain of African bees that resulted in public panic. Yes! I still tell this story from time to time. There was a significant period of my childhood where I was sure the killer bee "invasion" would continue to spread and would be a serious problem for the country. I remember seeing the maps and everything.

Still scared to death of bees, and now that I think of it it's probably because of this.
