That episode aired 20 years ago and I say aired because it was before online streaming became widely available.
Episode 3/Air date March 7, 2003

It’s pretty outdated now anyways, isn’t it? If I recall correctly, the answer was yes but you’d have to eat a TON of poppy seeds for it to make your test positive. I think that now the screening tests they use are much more sensitive and can pick up false positives from poppy seeds more easily.

You are absolutely right. It's also why "it was 2nd hand smoke" doesn't work. They can tell the difference.

Some guy that managed a place in Australia that I lived in, suggested that drug smuggling via bird seed (those compressed pyramid things) was highly lucrative & possible in the 70's. Dunno, possible. Motorcycle gang type.

A place I used to work at would fill the break room with free poppyseed food items right before a drug test to deliberately get false positive tests so they could easily fire people.
I always expected somebody to sue, nobody ever did.
RockPusherMan t1_je01eiw wrote
did anyone actually get fired because of that?
(if not... no lawsuit)
Arawn-Annwn t1_je13pwb wrote
Several.
Might have been too hard to prove that it was the food at the time. Or maybe the persons that got canned really were using something that would show on the test anyway. Who knows.
RockPusherMan t1_je13y18 wrote
wow. no second tests? no "chance of false positive" options?
That's so sketchy
HeavyMetalChick19 t1_jdzke9m wrote
Yes. Learned that from a Seinfeld episode.

Back in 1997, I was in the US Army and one of the NCO's there told me to avoid Lemon Poppyseed muffins or anything with poppyseeds because I'd piss hot for the urinalysis tests as if I were on opiates or heroin.

My dad, who is retired now, has a great story because of this. Before he retired, he worked at a metal producing plant and started getting "randomly" selected each month to get tested. After the 4th "random" selection he started keeping a poppy seed bagle in his desk. Sure enough, he got selected a 5th time so he immediately ate the bagle then went to get tested. 30 minutes later, he got sent home. Got 3 days paid vacation for a false positive because of state drug laws. He stopped getting "randomly" selected after that.

I learned this is high school from a good girl failing for opiates. Her face when they said that was wild. They came in to the group of us who took them and looked at her and say she failed for it and that was the reason. Her parents did an investigation as to why she would of failed for it and that’s what the came to find out. Poppy seed salad dressing.

It may show a positive result in a basic test depending on how much you eat and the time between consumption and testing. It will not fool a quality lab test.

Acquaintance of mine failed a workplace drug test due to purchasing 3 lunch rolls with poppy seeds on them in the period of one week. Testing is quite sensitive apparently.

Not necessarily, but most “tests” keep this fact in mind and trace amounts of morphine are seen as normal.
