I guess he knew people would later put that stuff in a museum to gawk at and he wasn't having it.

TIL William McKinley was the 25th president of the United States, serving from 1897 until his assassination in 1901. As a politician he led a realignment that made his Republican Party largely dominant in the industrial states and nationwide until the 1930s. Also, his vice-president was Teddy Roosevelt.

McKinley's was the third Presidential assassination in 36 years (Lincoln in 1865 and Garfield in 1881)

Jesus, as a non-American I thought that the only assassinated American presidents were Lincoln and Kennedy.

I wonder why McKinley and Garfield are not that famous.

Garfield's is understandable because he was only in office a few months when he was shot. But his assassination was a really interesting story. McKinley was well-liked but is a slightly obscure president

Garfield wasn’t very notable otherwise. He also took 2 months to die and likely would have survived if his doctor had better hygienic standards.

We've had a lot of presidents, and as you probably noticed, some of them were pretty dismal.

God I could really go for a dismal boring president right about now.

We have that now.

We went from worst president in history to boring Biden.

It is so nice to have boring again.

Almost 10% of American presidents have been assassinated (4/46).

CorgiMonsoon t1_jed6foo wrote

4 out of 45. While there have been 46 administrations, there have been 45 men who’ve been President, as Grover Cleveland served as both the 22nd and 24th.

afrogirl44 t1_jedqvn7 wrote

That’s not the most interesting thing that happened to a president. One of them got stuck in the bathtub because he was so fat and they somehow got him out and had to buy a bigger tub and replace the tub he got stuck in.

VaudevilleDada t1_jeart1g wrote

Yup, and all three are covered at length in Sarah Vowell's Assassination Vacation, though Lincoln's understandably gets the lion's share of her attention.

Leon Czolgosz shot the President but really it was the doctors who killed him, with their comical incompetence - McKinley was shot in the stomach and was appearing to recover, before an infection (probably caused by the botched operation) finished him off.

archfapper OP t1_jebkjsy wrote

Ditto for James Garfield. He really died of gangrene and slowly starving all summer

worldofoysters t1_jeblnrb wrote

Oddly enough, Hay's Secretary of State - John Hay - had also been Garfield's Assistant Secretary of State and close acquaintance. And also a much younger man, Hay was also a secretary to Lincoln, and surrogate son, and present at his deathbed.

Probably the only man to have been present at the deaths of three US presidents

Robert todd Lincoln stopped attending presidential events at this time too

Seems much better than letting mass shooters publishing their manifestos and receiving fanmail.

SidSnow64 t1_jee29zr wrote

I’m surprised that some people are surprised that fuckers like that get fan mail. These people get really famous and there’s a lot of sickos out there and who do sickos like ? Other sickos. Of course out of hundreds of millions of people who heard about them on the news there’s gonna be a few sickos sending them fan mail.

He did nothing wrong. McKinley deserved a million times what he got for his action in the Philippines.
