Maybe if you approach the school and talk to them they’ll help ? If you explain the situation could pay them off . Schools I’ve been a part of don’t want to see kids miss out on things .

Yeah its a shitty situation for all involved. If you can't get enough for him to go, perhaps you could try and make up by spending a day with him doing fun stuff? Movies or getting lunch or something.

I could see how paying bills would take priority over a field trip when it comes to remembering. I don't think you are a shit parent only based on this one mistake.
I'd rather have food, clothes and shelter instead of a field trip. But I am antisocial.
