So I (17f) decided that red hair waesnt what I wanted anymore. In the beginning of July, I did half of my hair black and even tho black box dye is really hard to get rid off I did a good job to dye my hair ginger at the end of august. Two days ago, I decided to be blonde again (last time I was 11). I buyed some bleach, purple shampoo, you name it. After washing my hair, I realized that the half black hair I got months ago was still there and mixed with the orange to make this wierd dark blonde orangey hair while the other side was stained orange. I tried everything and nothing worked, so I decided to dye it light brown. Little did I know that purple shampoo left green highlights in my hair. Plus that brown dye didn’t stick well to my scalp. Now I have green hair with blonde roots. Even tho I hate to say that, I think I will need to dye it black. I cannot afford a hairstylist, so now my hair sucks now.

TL;DR : I decided to dye my hair blond and it was ugly so I put brown instead, which is even uglier.

Before you go any further, go over to r/hairdye and get some advice on how to fix it. Because often times there's a way out if you're patient, but black dye all over is not going to be the best route to end up lighter again eventually. If nothing else, at least choose a semi-permanent rather than a permanent color.

Tbh I wanted black hair one day so I won’t mind doing it. It takes a lot making it lighter but it worked so I’ll see what I can do but thanks for the advice :D

Either way, r/hairdye is a great resource. And if you use professional color rather than box dye, you can usually reverse it/color over it easier later. (And it's often cheaper per coloring than the box dye too depending on what you get.)

I don’t have the money to go to a hair salon tbh, I live in an apartment and work a minimum wage job. I took almost all sparing I could have to do that. I can only try something to fix my hair one last time before some weeks, or even months.

St3phiroth t1_ixl57rl wrote

Oh, I didn't mean to get it professionally colored. You can go to a beauty supply store yourself - somewhere llike Sally's Beauty Supply - and buy the same type of color they would use in a salon. The developer is like $10 for enough to do several color treatments, and then the individual dyes (the color part) are typically around $4-8. If you have shorter hair, those can sometimes do 2 treatments.

The sales people working at my local Sally's have always been super helpful with their advice too. So even if you don't buy stuff, they could possibly point you in the right direction.

I meant hair bleach lmao not like cleaning bleach but if u meant the hair one I used that a ton of times and it’s only this week that it messed up due to the still very present black dye

I'll explain my joke.

You said "buyed bleach". "Buyed" isn't a word, you were looking for "bought"

My joke was implying that all the bleach has caused issues leading to the spelling and grammar mistakes.

It's all good. It was a poke in the side, not a pitchfork :)

I recommend going to a punk/goth store and buying bleach from there.

That hardcore stuff strips all the colour out. The supermarket stuff is like 40% as effective

Mediterraneancalma t1_ixlngaq wrote

Well so what haha lol u can just don't care about such things, u do this eventually, not caring about others opinions etc. eventually but the sooner u realize the better. So what if u have a rainbow hair right now? Instead of damaging ur hair with a new dye, wait for a while for ur hair to recover and then later u can dye it again.

3

ConfidentBirthday523 OP t1_ixlnmbg wrote

My hair is doing better than before I dyed it tbh so I don’t think I would need to wait that much (I used a shit ton of magical hair oil and conditioner lmao)

3

Mediterraneancalma t1_ixlny7s wrote

Well yea but dying ur hair is damaging, and when u do it so often it could be more damaging. So instead of ruining ur hair to avoid getting judged or getting laughed at, embrace it haha. If it looks cool, or if u like it then there is no problem with having a colorful hair

ConfidentBirthday523 OP t1_ixlqewq wrote

It’s looking wayyy to bad but I guess if I put some red in it to at least cancel the poopy green I would be fine haha

Is it really that bad? Lmao rip. Well yes u can dye it to red better than just go back to black if ur goal is to be blonde

i work with people (in a hospital that technically requires "natural" colors) that have purple, green, pink, blue, etc. colored hair. And any combination of them. Interesting dye colors are just the way these days.

When you're 30 you'll laugh about it and it'll be a funny story you tell at work. People have so many odd hair colors now compared to 30 years ago so just remember confidence sells. Laugh about it and get someone in a salon or beauty supply story to give practical advice.

Woah Woah Woah stop where you are before you go bald.

Take it from a 31 year old who has only ever dyed her own hair never seen a hair stylist (and I've done all the colours of the rainbow), this is fixable but we need to confirm some things.

What box colours are you using and do they have hydrogen piroxcide in them? If they do stop any colouring and enjoy the green for 2 weeks minimum, you've done too many colours too fast your hair will go brittle if it's not already and will fall out eventually. Just loads of washing with a good quality conditioner for coloured or damaged hair (like try washing your hair every other day, if you can afford it and get hold of them conditioner masks every day. What you can try to avoid extra damage from over washing is wetting your hair just so you could put the conditioner in and leaving the conditioner for 5-8 minutes before washing it out). If they dont you're fine to do this next step. If they do only do this step after 2 weeks minimum or enjoy bald spots.

Not being sure which country you're in I can't say a specific brand for you but you need to look for something like this hair colour remover, extra strength due to the amount of colour in your hair

You may have to do 2/3 due to the level of colour you've done but you may get away with just 1 if you're very very careful. Heat is very much your friend with colour b4 so if you get that one make sure to have a hair dryer/cling film at the ready but still do the full times it suggests (I have super thick hair so I normally leave it in an extra 30 minutes and then go over it with the hair dryer before washing it all out), any others read the instructions carefully. When washing it out it's really important to try a few different water temperatures at the end to make sure everything is gone. I've done it before where I thought it was the right temperature and the water was clear but actually it was too hot/cold and the colour came back so do a few different ones and don't stop until all the water runs clear.

After you have stripped all the colour from your hair and you're sure you are definitely down to your natural colour give it at least 48 hours to make sure you didn't miss anything and the colour doesn't come back making sure to conditioner it a lot in that 48 hours. After that the world is your oyster. However unless you have gone blonde and your hair has fully taken it properly NEVER put another colour on top of the colour in your hair. Always strip the colour first using hair colour remover and do not bleach a colour, that's how you end up green not the purple shampoo. I say that as I have never used purple shampoo or any of that side of products yet when bleaching my hair blonde to go red/blue/green etc well let's just say especially for the green I didn't need the box dye in the end and I had to delay my red and blue dyes to get rid of the green.

I used box dye from revlon & I threw all the packages and stuff so I can’t know what’s inside of them. I know that my hair is really “strong” against bleaches If right after I use conditionner, a hair mask and some oil. Right now it’s even softer than my hair before I started this crazy journey. I’m in Canada and I got most of the good quality hair products to like don’t get bald (I miss the old times). I’ll screenshot that comment to do it later when I’ll go get more stuff to fix the mess I have on :D

DeadlyShaving t1_ixln6np wrote

In the UK Revlon hasn't used hydrogen peroxide in over a decade so you should be good, when you're in the store look at the box for the same one you used to be safe. I'm not sure but I think Canada has similar laws to us around hydrogen peroxide so there shouldn't be any in them but don't bank on that just encase I'm wrong.

My hair was really "strong" against bleach and would be really soft if I used good conditioner/masks after too. Until one day it wasn't, I'd used bleach 4 times in 13 months (one or 2 double bleaching as something went wrong) and 2 turned green. Bald spots everywhere. It's back to normal now and I do my hair max once or twice a year to protect its condition/quality. As you're young and it sounds like you haven't had too many disasters yet your hair is still "strong" now but it'll turn like a flip of a switch if you do too much too quick.

Please someone help. I just tried to dye my hair silver and it is not working. I followed the box, I used dye with the conditioner. My hair colour is black, and that is my natural colour. Can i do this without bleach? I tried it and it washed off completely. I really don't want to bleach my hair.

3

sunflower4524 t1_ixnc4ct wrote

To get your hair light enough to take silver hair dye you'll have to use bleach, unfortunately.

3

ConfidentBirthday523 OP t1_ixng0fq wrote

You’ll need to bleach it if you want more than silvery highlights. Idk your financial situation but I would recommend when you bleach ur hair to put lots of oils and conditioner to help prevent damage. And if you bleach the roots, put conditionner and oil on it as well. Idk anything about hair colour but that’s how I saved my hair from being fried off

i'm keeping my hair red by dying the gray roots and i think by now it has to be almost all gray underneath. Seriously been considering just chopping it off and letting that grow out. But my hair grows so slowly i'd be stuck with short hair for years. Meh.

I feel your pain. I'm 31m, been dying my hair black for years, and the last time I wanted a change, I tried to go blonde. My shoulder length hair became a medieval friar bob lol. My hair was elastic and breaking so badly if you just looked at it wrong. Luckily like I said, I'm a man, so when I had to shave my head it wasn't the worst thing, but still. Best of luck to you!

Always do research before fucking with your hair 😩 Red is notorious for staining and even after bleaching can be close to impossible to lift 100% especially in one session. As far as black box dye. It fucked. I've been dying my hair black for 10 years with box black. Tried bleaching a few pieces a few years back, got a copper color and no color would stick to it. Still I continue to use box black 😂

neechankitsune t1_ixqmrry wrote

Coming from someone who basically did this to my own hair years back, you could always order a wig off Amazon or something. It's gonna take awhile for your hair to get healthy & get its color back & a wig will save you much time & hassle! I've been wearing wigs ever since then & hardly anybody ever asks if it's real. They're usually no more than $20-$30 & there's so many options! Just a thought. Good luck! ♡
