The padding is actually a fine powder (sodium polyacrylate) which absorbs crazy amounts of water. When wet it becomes a sort of snow-like powder, or if wet enough a gel.

The parent company, Proctor & Gambol, invests heavily in polymer science research, because that’s how we get the weird interior that absorbs.
If I had any chance of doing this sort of research for a career I would have hopped on it. But alas my dyslexia made chemistry class absolute Hell.

That powder is the same stuff they put in those water cooling neck wrap tube things, and in “core coolers” for dogs. It’s really neat stuff, well, except after a kid pees, of course.

I remember going to teen events with swimming pools of the stuff. All clothes worn therein were just pitched, as there’s no point in trying to clean the gel out of them.
