I (20’s M) have worked for cash with a local Contractor (50’s M) for about a year now.
I started by helping him with some side work whilst being at my old job. I left my old job in pursuit of the career I have now (union). In the gap of time, about 6 months I worked for him full time. Busted my ass with long hours and large projects. After our last job my boss told me that he didn’t have the money to pay me even though he just got 10k from the owner of the home. I continued to work because he promised he would pay me in full plus more. After about 2 weeks I finally got paid. Since then, he has been consistent with payments. (I know I shouldn’t have trusted this but I needed money)
I want to add that getting into the Union, you are not promised a start date. It is a long, tedious process and if I had known it would take so long I would have stuck with my old job.
That brings us to now. I completed an entire job primarily on my own; and he said he can’t pay again. I told him I couldn’t keep working if he couldn’t pay me. Luckily for me, the next week my job would begin. He couldn’t fathom me not coming into work on Monday despite the fact he wouldn’t pay me. Now he refuses to pay me. I’ve texted- the texts go unanswered. I’ve called- the calls are ignored, declined or most recently answered with yelling and belittlement.
The FU here is that I should have left when he wasn’t paying me- especially when it was “under the table”. How do I get the money he owes me? (Roughly 1.2k) Any advice is appreciated.
TL;DR I didn’t get paid by my boss. Now he won’t answer me
