Sitting in a Walmart parking lot, and I hear the sound of glass breaking. Looking around I see two guys messing with a with a fairly nice looking car. Nothing super expensive just above average. I notice that they have broken the rear passenger window , and are now reaching inside. Keep in mind, this is a normal weather Midwest day , not crazy hot so I knew they weren't trying to get a baby out. I see them open the door and start looking through all the stuff in the car. So I get out and try to figure out what they're doing. All I did was ask , and immediately they threw one of those glass breaker emergency things. The bigger of the two starts to walk over towards me and is yelling at me to look away and F-off. Without even thinking, because now in hindsight I know it's a stupid decision, I say quit messing with my friend's car. Mind you, I never met the owner of this car. The second one puts their hand to their pocket and starts to walk over. And the second he got with in range, I clocked him in the head. He went down, but his friend was able to immediately knock me down. From there it was downhill, I don't have much fighting experience, but I was taller than both of them so I had some advantage, but still ended up getting my ass handed to me I was able to stay up long enough for a couple of stereotypical dad-bod looking people to come over and get them off me. After that I just left. Got myself cleaned up with a little bit of help from my brother , and now a few hours later I decided making a post on Reddit would be the best choice. I only have a broken finger, but hindsight tells me that maybe I shouldn't fight for someone else's car.

TL:DR, Don't fight people over a car that isnt even yours. It hurts.

I still don't know, all I did was get by ass whooped, for someone I didn't even know. Not to assume anything but, the car was nice enough that they probably had good insurance.

Yeah next time just call the police and record the chaos with your cell phone like a normal person. Does this even need a /s?

Props to you for having the moral courage to do the right thing. I would buy you a beer and offer you a bump of cocaine if you lived in my town.

My general rule is, if it's just property, it's not worth my health, so I get what you mean with regret. However, I think as a whole, people engage in immoral acts without confrontation or consequence too often. That's why we see posts of police looking for young men who punched an old lady when there were people who could have detained him.

I say, good for those guys for helping you as you were in real danger, but I agree, hindsight tells you, record them, call the cops, give the best descriptions you can so they can face their legal ramifications.

I have that rule too, but I had my car broken into last year. Nobody should have to deal with that. In other news, do you think Walmart would let me get the video from their security cameras? Would be kind of funny to watch myself get beat up lol!

Only thing “wrong” done was not recording it for the police, and not dialing 911. Also, buy a gun man, you did the right thing to place someone else first. Well done!

No shade on your course of action, and I don't know what you had available at the time, but in that situation I'd just dial 911, and start talking to the guys while you had the operator on the phone. Extra points for standing back and taking a few pictures before dialing.

I'm from Canada though, so that might make a difference.

No bro. DO do that shit. The only reason they did it so brazenly was because they counted on bystanders to stay out of it. When really they need that fear back that someone WILL intervene. Evil triumphs when good men do nothing.

If it’s property, just let it go. You never know when someone is carrying a gun and how crazy they are.

Keep a knife with you at all times. That way next time you see some jagoffs like this, you wait until they get to their getaway vehicle then slash their tires.

I don't think you fucked up. Even if you got your ass beat you protected that car. You put that car above yourself. Man this is honorable

Well an itty bitty knife ain’t going to get you an upper hand, especially since most people have a knife on them (especially if you’re the “bad guy”. And in a 2v1 situation whee you’re out bulked, out numbered, and out tooled is never where you want to be. If he had done this at night, or in any other location, he very well may be dead if no one was around to help.

Pepper spray doesn’t do anything, a gun gets people off of you, of course you don’t fire unless it escalates and your life is at risk. It’s merely there as a deterrent. Imagine the situation at any other time, and perhaps a different location. He could have been dead man.

Pepper spray doesn't do anything? Really? Maybe if they're on cocaine! I promise unarmed car thieves don't have the fight in them. You don't take out a gun unless you're willing to use it, and so many things could go wrong once you show you're willing to kill them. The best case scenario for everyone is that they stop breaking into the car and go to jail. Non-lethal is the way to go.

fozzy_bear42 t1_j9avguv wrote

To be honest, if you’d pulled out a weapon you’d probably be much worse off than a broken finger.

Very little good ever comes from escalating a situation, who knows what sort of weapons the other guys could’ve pulled out.

_Kokiru_ t1_j9b0imv wrote

A gun is non-lethal. You aim it and tell them verbally to get away, or on the ground, etc etc. if you aren’t willing to kill when necessary, than you don’t value your life at all, nor the lives of others. This man would be dead in any other situation, but with a gun? At least you can shoot towards em and run, it’s a deterrent, and a weapon, not just a deterrent.

(Also “maybe in on cocaine” you don’t know if any of these guys were past military members, officers, etc etc, who have trained to be able to still preform with your “deterrent”. Don’t place your life in the enemies hands, take it and guard it yourself in situations like these.)

Don't put words in my mouth. I'm saying that a gun needlessly escalates a situation. What happens if they charge you thinking they're going to die? It was a freaking parking lot with people in it, it's not like it was a back alley where he'd never have been discovered. Even if you DO shoot them, congrats, they didn't have to die and they'd have never been thinking life or death without that gun there in the first place.

My argument is simply that having something like pepper spray will create better outcomes in this particular situation than a gun.

Or it would tick off the bear, especially since there are two of them to worry about. These guys were already angry and unreasonable, no criminal is going to rob a car for their life, and these folks don’t seem high, you and I both know he wouldn’t have been beaten up if he had drawn a weapon. I put those words in your mouth, because that’s what your actions in regards to the situation state. Weapons only escalate an already escalated situation. Ie a shoot out. In such a case you run away if given the chance.

(You do also know that shooting someone doesn’t kill them right? That’s why you train with your gun, so you know when to take a life, and when to protect one even if they don’t see it as that.)

Time to start working on cardio, bro. Next time you taunt them and gain aggro you just kite them around the parking lot until the police arrive.

I did cross country all four years of high school? I've also been lifting for the last 3 years. There were two guys there, one of them was my size. The other was bigger. You're just not going to win a fight like that if you don't have any sort of experience.

Absolutely, theres a difference between witnessing someone suffering bodily harm and not doing something, and a crime against property. In DC recently there was a case where a homeowner shot and killed a 13 year old for breaking into cars on their street. It has been decided that he will not face criminal charges, but he does have to live with the fact that he murdered a child for a petty crime.

If it makes you feel better you could think that you didn't really fight for the car but you fought for your principles and that you would have really regretted not doing anything instead.

Now does that mean it was smart? Fuck no. You didn't know if they had a weapon or a gun so you might as well have ended up at the morgue instead of lamenting your broken self esteem and finger.
Especially so considering it wasn't your car or anyone's that you knew for that matter.
And it was property damage so it might be covered by that guy's insurance even.

I don’t care if you die for attacking someone else, especially if they’re there to protect against the illegal activity you are doing.
