Today I fucked up by washing and drying the cushion covers of my 1970s glorious, yellow crushed velvet, cost us $1 at auction, seemingly indestructible couch.
It has nice industrial metal zippers on all the cushions so you can take the foam out and wash the covers i presumed. Having three boys under 10, as you can imagine, a light colored couch is bound to get dirty. The straw that broke the camels back was the red kool-aid stain. So I took all the foam out and zipped the covers back shut and tossed them in for a wash. This morning when they came out of the dryer is when I noticed that the inside seams weren't finished/serged. Or, rather, thats when I noticed the zippers weren't wanting to unzip. Cue cursing. Finally get one unzipped and am met with what appears to be a spiderweb of thread and fluff. The fluff is clogging the zippers.
On a positive note, after extensive trimming of threads and scooping out of fluff, the seams are holding, the foam is back in, and my couch is back to it's full yellow glory. The covers do seem to have shrunk slightly, but we did get them zipped back up even if it took two people!
Most of my living room is also speckled in yellow fluff. There's a pile of thread on the floor by the couch. I've now got to vaccum/dust EVERYTHING. I made so much more cleaning work for myself by trying to make the couch look nice again.
TL;DR: washed couch covers and ended up covered my living room in yellow fuzz and thread.
