NYC resident who was just in D.C. for the long weekend. I thought it was awful. Had previously only been for day trips with school.
It's, quite frankly, shocking that it's the seat of our national government.
Violent and property crime there is way higher in DC than NYC.

How... In the Hell... Can you say D. C. Isn't diverse?? Are you serious? You're complaining about the weather, when it's better than NYC Weather. After you sure you actually loved in the city? In the regular parts NOT just Capital Hill?

Well, wouldn’t that make it the perfectly apropos seat of the national government?

As someone who grew up in the DC region and has lived in NYC, I can empathize. There’s a reason so many people in the DC area flee to the suburbs. If the suburban lifestyle doesn’t appeal to you, it can be very hard to be live decently in the city proper without having/spending insane amounts of money.

The entertainment and restaurant part of your spiel was a joke, right? The lack of diversity part? D.C. is the most diverse place in America and yes, it's as diverse as NYC, if not more. I'm not trying to beat you up for dissing D.C., to each his own, as the youths say, but come on man! Inside the beltway isn't for everyone. The neverending choices of food and entertainment alone places D.C. in the same league of every major city in the world because every city/country in the world is represented in...D.C. that alone totally cancels your lack of diversity take. Get out and explore the place. Every quadrant is unique.

Don’t live in dc proper. There’s tons of areas outside of dc with relatively easy commutes into the city via metro that will likely appeal to you more. As for the weather… it is what it is. It’s 80 one day and snowing the next. You get used to it.

It’s fair if you don’t like it here. But nothing interesting to do or good entertainment and performances/concerts is totally on you. Lack of diversity is absurd. And I don’t know where you’re eating but we’ve got good food. The drivers are insane, I’ve got plenty of experience with that. And metro isn’t up to snuff right now. Are you relying on others to do things? It’s possible to explore the city on your own.
I’m just not sure how you’ve missed out on what DC has to offer though. What parts of the city are you in? What venues do you know about? How much have you looked into local blogs and publications to find things to do? I love my city and I do know it’s not for everyone, but I do think you’ve not found much of what’s on offer here. Look at DCist for a good local publication and clockoutdc is an excellent resource on Instagram for things to do around town.

Since your field has limited roles, is moving out of the US an option at all? Perhaps you can apply for international roles. It may take a while to find an opportunity especially for an overseas move but at least it's a way to move out of DC eventually while not jeopardizing your work.
