I’d caught a few episodes here or there and always enjoyed what I saw, but I kinda always grouped it in a lower tier. Just started season 2 and it’s been fantastic. The cast is solid and jokes are really great.
I know about the quality diving and spoilers with certain cast members dropping out or hooking up, but when would you guys say it actually drops off just so I’m prepared?
When Eric leaves the show.

It’s legitimately the same cast but with a Colorado ranching theme.
It starts to drop around season 4, in my opinion. The first three seasons were grounded, had some working-class grit to it, and after that it just gets lazier and lazier in its writing.
Seasons 1 and 2 of that show are some of the best that sitcom as a genre has to offer, as far as I am concerned.
It’s easily one of the better shows from that era. I love it. Even when Eric is gone it’s not horrible. Little bit more out there but still good

I think the grounded aspect has been my biggest surprise and a reason I’m enjoying it as someone from a small midwestern town (though not from the 70s). A lot of the episodes I saw were from later seasons so after the first season and a few episodes into the second I’ve been shocked at how ‘real’ it feels.
It really does just feel like a bunch of midwestern teenagers from a middle of nowhere town hanging out in basement. It doesn’t lean on the 70s gimmick nearly as hard as I expected.
It definitely stays solid, but is a little past it’s prime by the time he leaves. Like when Carell left The Office. It wasn’t BAD that season, but it wasn’t season 2 or 3.
Yeah, the stuff with Red and his job, the money troubles, the tension between Kitty and Red's mother, the general "feel" of the family life and the day-to-day hanging with friends, it just all was done so much better in those first three seasons.
After that, in my opinion, the show progressively gets worse. While everyone says it's bad when Eric leaves (and I agree), it was still pretty damn bad even prior to his departure. The characters become caricatures to me and get stuck in a really boring narrative loop - which, when you think of it, makes some sense considering it takes place from May 1976 (I think) to December 31, 1979 but in real life the show was on air for what? 8 seasons? If I recall correctly, the show had more Christmas episodes than should have been possible. I think they did one a season which...?
The season before that is also kind poo. Not to the extent that the final season took a massive nosedive, but everything after Donna turned blonde is kinda not good.
No one is ever happy. It’s like misery porn. For five seconds they manage to pull themselves out of the muck and make enough money to pay their power bill or some depressing shit and then someone runs away or has a miscarriage or gets deported.
Plus it’s not just about rednecks, it’s for rednecks. I thought at first it was a show where we laughed at backwards morons who thought that Obama was a socialist, but we’re laughing with the backwards morons about how much of a socialist Obama is. Gross.
They really start running out of material around season 4ish. there’s only so much material you can get out of it with a group of people hanging out in a basement and dating all different people of the group.
Agreed, some of the repeated jokes get really tired my the middle of the shows run and yet they never retire them.
I got tired of it after the entire cast kept circling around banging each other. The writers really seemed to be grasping at any sort of friction to keep things going.
My favorite is when they, with like six episodes remaining in the series, decide that Jackie is in love with Fez and they try to jam a whole season’s worth of “will they won’t they” in to those six episodes. At the beginning of one episode she won’t even acknowledge her feelings for Fez, by the end of the next episode she’s saying “I’ve wanted this for so long!” Fantastic writing guys.

I just accept that holiday episodes for any tv show are not canon unless expicitly stated.
Something that’s really stuck out to me is how great Red and Kitty’s relationship is. They’re such a good couple and written really well especially for a sitcom. They have disagreements or arguments but they feel real and never extreme where you doubt their love or commitment to each other.
It’s a shockingly great depiction of a normal, loving relationship that I wasn’t expecting from a random network sitcom of all things lol
I mean that is technically on point for Jackie.

I'm curious how That 90s Show is going to handle the ending of That 70s Show overall. Eric and Donna got to the point they were terrible and unbearable seeing those two together as a couple by the time Topher Grace left. Jackie and Fez were the worst pairing. I think majority of us preferred Jackie and Hyde but we all know Danny Materson is out of the picture.
I hope they disregard the entirety of season eight as a possibility.
Everything but the final season is great.

Blonde Donna marks the part of the show I generally can't stand anymore. There's a run before that moment that gets kind of tiresome - basically "Donna is a horrible bitch to Eric after breaking his heart but Eric is also kind of a douchebag about it as well" gets insufferable but fortunately it does end eventually.
Blonde Donna does not end eventually.
Also while season 8 generally sucks, it has one of the funniest scenes in the entire show. I can't remember what episode it is, but it involves Bob trying to order from the drive-thru at the burger place while the gang are hiding in the bushes.
Also post-Blonde Donna has a really hilarious episode involving a vacuum cleaner and a lot of paranoia. So it's worth watching the entire show I think, just know that when you see blonde Donna that's about when it's just not as fun anymore, and also when it makes progressively less sense that Red is allowing all these now adults hang out in his basement all the time.
Someone said that Jackie was going to be with Kelso in That 90s Show, which it's like... okay the actors are married in real life, but Jackie was always better with Hyde and it's not as if they couldn't just recast Hyde.
My That 90s Show idea that I came up with a week before they actually announced they were doing it would've had it turn out that Eric and Donna had a long discussion after the finale and decided that while they'll basically always love each other, their lives have always been going in different directions and that was especially true with her officially going to college finally, so they have like one last fling and then part as friends. And I just ignored the Jackie/Fez thing, instead I had Jackie has a multiple-times divorcee (she figured out she really liked having weddings but not being married) who was an egg donor for Fez and his common law husband.
That was only Jackie basically lol

I dunno what’s with the attitude. It was never a ratings juggernaut and I rarely see it brought up by people nowadays. It’s why I thought of it as a serviceable network sitcom instead of actually being great, which is why I was surprised and made this thread.

Honestly this is bang on. Ive watched the show from beginning to end multiple times because i just love it. But you really do feel a slight quality drop pretty much right at the beginning of season 5. Then 7 had a pretty big drop but still had moments.

That 70's show was exactly the kind of show that I should have been able to relate to since they were portraying my age group at that period of time. But I've never sat thru any complete episodes, maybe I should.

I'm currently going through my X rewatch. I've lost count how many. You are already on the downhill. It just gets steeper and steeper. I feel like it's three to four where you realize this is nothing like what. The last two seasons are real bad with the last being almost unwatchable. F****** Randy. IDK why but he's just so unlikable. That all being said I've mentioned I lost count how many times I've rewatched it. I do enjoy it. I guess it's maybe cuz they started the characters off so well you follow them through the ridiculously bad writing.
First 5 seasons are fantastic. 6 and 7 are still worth watching, but I’d be lying if I said it didn’t start to run out of gas. There are only 7 seasons of That 70’s Show.

If you encounter Randy, you’ve gone too far.
Definitely avoid season 8, and recognize that season 7 and to a lesser extent season 6 will be a step down in quality from earlier seasons, but still watchable.
Season 8 is atrocious, though. Not worth it at all.
After you finish That 70's Show you can skip to like Season 83 of NCIS and see Fez all grown up as a federal agent!

It’s certainly debatable, but I’d rather not have Hyde at all than have him recast. Danny Masterson is a garbage-level human being that doesn’t deserve to come back, but he killed it in the original show. If you did bring him back, everyone would hyper-focus on whoever the new actor was and how it just “wasn’t Hyde”. Add to that the fact that Hyde as a character easily just fits into a throwaway “oh yeah he’s in jail”, so to me that’s definitely the best path
I usually watch up to Season 8, watch the first 6 episodes and then skip to the finale.

S8 is the only bad season. But it's still worth a watch.

The show is really good though, idk. I grew up in the early 2000s but it reminded me of me and my friends. We'd all hang out in my friend's garage and we'd just show up even if he wasn't there lol, just like the kids do with the Foreman's basement.
Which you should pay otherwise you could potentially starve.
Farming is an expensive business. Lucrative yes but it can also devastate you entirely if you have a bad season. Farming is subsided to prevent market crash and maintain consistent soil quality. (Effectively you will be paid not to grow)
Most farmers actually understand economics better than you.

There are some great jokes on that show, i guess it does sort of drop off and the ending was polarizing to some people but atleast it ended.
The 1st 3-4 seasons are perfect. Then it starts to decline, but it's still watchable. The last season I don't think I made it past 2 episodes. I really feel bad for the blond kid that replaced Chris; the guy got his big break and well...

That's the added value of the show for me, specifically him and his parents. The rest of the cast looks like this: Ashton Kutcher (fine, but a pretty broad character), Mila Kunis (same as Kutcher), Laura Prepon (also fine, but she's not as funny as the others), Wilmer Valderrama (no thanks, funny foreigner character was about 10 years expired even when the show came out) and Danny Masterson (never liked him or found him funny, pretty validated there).
So I'd say yeah, Topher and his parents are kind of the whole show, if we're being honest.
Over 20 rewatches later, I seriously wish I was in your shoes. Enjoy one of the best sitcoms of our generation.
I really liked the show as a kid/teenager, but as I get a bit older, I just can't listen to the laugh track or any for that matter. It ruins a lot of shows for me.
