Lol. This show was so poorly written and produced. The idea that anyone wants a second season is laughable. It’s like watching Disney kill Marvel all over again. This entire article is bullshit. Parrot Analytics is just another company paid to say good things about bad shows.

Me falling asleep during almost every episode doesn't bode well that I'll be interested in watching a second season.

Not surprised. It was definitely my favorite show out of everything that’s been available the past few months.

The reviews kept us away for awhile, but my wife and I recently got around to watching it and really enjoyed it. We also watch a lot of British mystery shows so we didn’t mind the pacing so much. Looking forward to future installments if it happens.

This post will get downvoted but the negative one from business insider will reach the top of the sub. The hate boner for this show on here is crazy.

Somehow I doubt that there's much demand for this show. Took less than a week after the finale for a lot of people in the MSM to stop the "best show evarrrrrr" charade. Overall opinion seems to be generally negative. Fan reaction has been generally abysmal. It's just a giant mess.

Plenty of people like the show, I don't doubt it. But somehow I do doubt that, if there wasn't a multi-season contracts, there's anywhere near enough demand to have them sign off on a season 2.

I don't really have any strong opinion on this show but it is fascinating how divisive it is overall. It doesn't seem to be an atrocity that its biggest haters claim it is, but it is also not the ultimate fantasy show that it's supporters claim.

Honestly for a show that is just 7/10, I don't get why it inspires so much passion on both sides other than the fact it belongs to the Lord of the Rings IP. And even then its not like its existence will somehow erase the existence of the original books or the Peter Jackson movies.

RyanB_ t1_iu3xnq8 wrote

The opposite end is people gassing up HotD to the point where any criticism at all is going to be immediately controversial…

For my money they’re two flawed but overall pretty good shows that are ultimately very different, and as a fantasy fan I’ve thoroughly enjoyed having both. Just wish it was easier to have a good faith discussion about either online

mrnicegy26 t1_iu3xy42 wrote

Game of Thrones fans on r/television are just so tiring. Its either the IP is ruined forever, it has no cultural impact, I would never watch GOT again or blind worship of it and blindly shitting on other shows. There is no nuance, no middle ground, it is either the greatest or the worst and nothing in between.

RyanB_ t1_iu3y7oc wrote

That’s unfortunately been the trend for a lot of media discussion online, but yeah GoT shit is just on another level. And it just dominates the subreddit

You're not allowed to appreciate and enjoy the fact that you have two high budget, large scale fantasy shows to enjoy. You must pick a side and gaslight fans of the other.

Despite the relentless negative posts on /r/television, everyone I've ever talked to about this show really enjoyed it. I personally thought it was the best Lord of the rings production since Rankin Bass' The Hobbit.

frenz9 t1_iu425xn wrote

I mean for the most expensive tv show per episode, from one of the largest IPS known for its quality writing and world building people were expecting something amazing. The show was ‘ok’ but that’s well short.

Kenobi_01 t1_iu442en wrote

I rather enjoyed it.

It has some obvious flaws, especially in the first couple of episodes.

But it was overall fun to watch, and I liked it. What more is there to want?

Enjoyed LOTR books, Jackson’s adaptations were very good, The Hobbit trilogy was poor. Rings of Power felt like getting back into a comfy pair of slippers, enjoyed it throughout.

Surprise by the lack of discussion on this post, though I guess since it's not a doom and gloom post it's not popular around here.

15

froop t1_iu4e4rv wrote

Long doesn't mean slow. The trilogy tells the entire LOTR story in 9 (or 12) hours. That's not slow, that's dense. RoP takes 8 hours to tell barely any story at all. Hours pass where nothing happens. The characters are barely developed. We can't even begin to have character arcs because we don't know who most of them are in the first place. That's slow.

21

TemurTron t1_iu4jp66 wrote

I absolutely adored this season and I can’t wait for more. Was it as good as the original LOTR Trilogy? No, but it had a lot of the similar charm and it’s just so damn fun to be back in Middle Earth again. The haters on the internet are completely delusional and never gave the show a chance, there is a lot to love in the show and even if it isn’t LOTR Trilogy quality it’s still better than 98% of the shows on TV.

I've watched them, I saw Two Towers last weekend. I still found it more entertaining and it went 'faster' than any single episode of this show.

People don’t mean viewing length when they say its slow, they mean its slow

It didn’t even come close. That’s why they’re desperately throwing out all kinds of articles simultaneously gaslighting, apologising and deflecting the opinions of this show.

Amazon and Bezos wanted GOT, they aren’t going to get it

HoD was created in a lab by scientists to attract the kind of fan that drives social media engagement.

You put that level of production quality with episodes packed with dragons, nudity and violence and you get an absolutely rabid fanbase online.

By all means show me how much money these 'anti woke Youtubers' are making considering Youtube demonetizes and strikes them constantly for their opinions.

I guess I’m just shocked how anyone could watch this horribly written show. It supplied an unbelievable amount of plot contrivance, some of the most laughable dialogue and the cast was jam packed with C and D list talent. How is someone gonna invest THAT much money into a show and hire folks with zero star power?!

2

wednesdayware t1_iu64ahd wrote

And your second response is a perfectly valid opinion. Your first was laughable hyperbole. People can discuss whether or not they like the writing, or how they feel about the show.

But the discussion isn’t furthered by saying ridiculous things like you did earlier.

For the record, I want a second season, and I enjoyed the show a lot. I found the plotting to be fine, and apart from a few wince-worthy lines of dialogue, the writing wasn’t as terrible as you’re making it out to be.

istandwhenipeee t1_iu69vxt wrote

The number of fans who are upset that RoP isn’t grimdark fantasy like GoT is insane to me. They’re not outright stating that, but a ton of the criticisms are over things like them not talking like real people, it lacking the pace and consistent drama of GoT/HotD, and it lacking realism in its battles and choreography.

If it went in that direction to satisfy those viewers it would cease to fit in the world Tolkien created. If that was the intention Amazon expressed i doubt they’d have even gotten the rights from Tolkien’s estate. Its fine to not enjoy Tolkien’s style, but a lot of people don’t seem to understand that something not being their preferred style doesn’t make it objectively worse.

Some light comparative data from users on my Plex server to add to anecdotal data:

Rings of Power:

  • ~25 total episodes watched
  • only one user has watched every episode
  • next farthest along is episode 5

House of the Dragon:

  • ~150 total episodes watched
  • only one user didn't watch every episode
  • three users watched it 2+ times through

Not commenting on quality; I just found it interesting.

Case in point: The Witcher. The haters put me off of it for years despite my love for Henry Cavill and a premise that sounded cool. Finally started it a few days ago, absolutely love it so far. It’s not a Mad Men-level masterpiece in storytelling or anything, but ridiculously enjoyable 4/5 television for me. Surprisingly brutal fight sequences, lavish visuals, solid acting, and even (hot take!) solid writing.

Wish I’d started it sooner but I’m kinda glad I’ll finish it right before Blood Origin comes out on my birthday (along w/ Amazon’s Jack Ryan, another show Reddit hates but that I really like!)

I'm one of those people who abandoned it. It kept putting me to sleep in the middle of the day, literally. It's visually stunning, but I found it so boring and flat. Now that it's over, I might try to binge it at some point, but it could not hold my attention.

The insane production costs.

Before it premiered there was almost non-stop news about how much money was poured into it, and now that it’s all done and over with the most that people can really say is “yeah it’s average”.

I think people expected the dollar amount to show on screen and left disappointed, especially when HotD was airing at the same time with a significantly lower budget and was doing gangbusters critically and commercially. I don’t care either way, but from what I’ve read this seems to be the main subject of discourse.

Forget precise complaints. I read the books 16 years ago and watched the complete first trilogy maybe even further back but you could tell within 10 mins of the show starting that they had literally no idea what they were getting involved with.

The monologue on why a ship floats is literally so dumb alongside a myriad of other random happenings. The dialogue, the writing, the characters are all completely bland and outright moronic.
