I don't really have any strong opinion on this show but it is fascinating how divisive it is overall. It doesn't seem to be an atrocity that its biggest haters claim it is, but it is also not the ultimate fantasy show that it's supporters claim.

Honestly for a show that is just 7/10, I don't get why it inspires so much passion on both sides other than the fact it belongs to the Lord of the Rings IP. And even then its not like its existence will somehow erase the existence of the original books or the Peter Jackson movies.

The opposite end is people gassing up HotD to the point where any criticism at all is going to be immediately controversial…

For my money they’re two flawed but overall pretty good shows that are ultimately very different, and as a fantasy fan I’ve thoroughly enjoyed having both. Just wish it was easier to have a good faith discussion about either online

Game of Thrones fans on r/television are just so tiring. Its either the IP is ruined forever, it has no cultural impact, I would never watch GOT again or blind worship of it and blindly shitting on other shows. There is no nuance, no middle ground, it is either the greatest or the worst and nothing in between.

That’s unfortunately been the trend for a lot of media discussion online, but yeah GoT shit is just on another level. And it just dominates the subreddit

HoD was created in a lab by scientists to attract the kind of fan that drives social media engagement.

You put that level of production quality with episodes packed with dragons, nudity and violence and you get an absolutely rabid fanbase online.

The number of fans who are upset that RoP isn’t grimdark fantasy like GoT is insane to me. They’re not outright stating that, but a ton of the criticisms are over things like them not talking like real people, it lacking the pace and consistent drama of GoT/HotD, and it lacking realism in its battles and choreography.

If it went in that direction to satisfy those viewers it would cease to fit in the world Tolkien created. If that was the intention Amazon expressed i doubt they’d have even gotten the rights from Tolkien’s estate. Its fine to not enjoy Tolkien’s style, but a lot of people don’t seem to understand that something not being their preferred style doesn’t make it objectively worse.

You're not allowed to appreciate and enjoy the fact that you have two high budget, large scale fantasy shows to enjoy. You must pick a side and gaslight fans of the other.

I mean for the most expensive tv show per episode, from one of the largest IPS known for its quality writing and world building people were expecting something amazing. The show was ‘ok’ but that’s well short.

It got Amazon exactly what they wanted. A lot of hype and increased traffic on prime video.

It didn’t even come close. That’s why they’re desperately throwing out all kinds of articles simultaneously gaslighting, apologising and deflecting the opinions of this show.

Amazon and Bezos wanted GOT, they aren’t going to get it

So all the articles you agree with are the truth, and all the articles you disagree with are gaslighting, apologizing and deflecting?

It literally drove the highest number of subscribers to prime of any show they have made. Sorry this ain't failing.

In inspires passion because some people think "LORD OF THE RINGS IS MY LIFE, HOW DARE YOU MAKE THIS CRAP, GANDALF IS SPELLED WITH A BIG G NOT A LITTLE G HOW COULD YOU NOT KNOW THAT I CANT BELIEVE " and the. On the other side "DONT TELL ME THAT MY TASTES ARE CRAP JUST BECAUSE YOU CANT LET GO, JUST LET ME ENJOY IT"

The insane production costs.

Before it premiered there was almost non-stop news about how much money was poured into it, and now that it’s all done and over with the most that people can really say is “yeah it’s average”.

I think people expected the dollar amount to show on screen and left disappointed, especially when HotD was airing at the same time with a significantly lower budget and was doing gangbusters critically and commercially. I don’t care either way, but from what I’ve read this seems to be the main subject of discourse.

It’s not divisive at all, it’s a very middling show and there are some very loud stans pretending it’s the subject of unjust persecution.
