I mean, its more about "the puzzle" but at least it dovetails with serving others

he definitely enjoys the game a lot, just like Sherlock Holmes. And like him, I believe House would willingly give his life to stop a, say, global threat

Nah, I think he'd be more like Captain Hindsight who asesses the structural issues of a burning building and then, having finished his work, flies off into the sunset while the occupants + bystanders cheer and burn.
