"...this 13th-Gen Raptor Lake chip is also now officially the most power-hungry desktop CPU in history..."
Of course, after discounting the voracious power-hungry Kari Lake Velociraptor

Well looks like we're getting back into space heater PC territory again boys. Gonna be nice and toasty in our computer rooms atleast haha.

Everyone is going to need at least a 1000w PSU soon if you plan to have a good GPU and CPU.

Intel is in bed with power utilities.

From the /r/starcitizen crowd... I'm not entirely sure this cpu will make that game happy. lol. I think intel needs to give us a 1000ghz processor soon or we won't be able to go above 30fps!

I bought a thousand watt in my last build because I was noticing the uptick. I'm honestly worried 1000W isn't future proof beyond 3-4 years. We went 100W or so up on GPU and CPU in 2 years. If they do that again then with power spikes 1000W supply could lead to the computer turning off.

Wonder if we will see duel psu support on consumer PC become more widley avaliable. Might be more efficient.

I feel the graphics card situation has really changed my perception of the cost and power consumption of computer components. $699 and 250w seem pretty mild really.

I ordered a prebuilt with a 13900KS and a 4090. My suggested with my build is 970. I almost opted for something bigger than 1000W just because the close margins.

Yeah, I just did my first rebuild in many years. Upgraded from an i7-4770k and 1080 RTX to an i7-13700KF and 3070 RTX.
My goal was a major performance upgrade without resorting to major power consumption increases. I only needed a 600W PSU for my build and it screams. I could have afforded more, but I don't feel comfortable running that hot, especially with all the melted cables I was seeing with 4090s. That just seems like the industry moving in the wrong direction.

Not likely. Not enough amps on a single 15A circuit.

Intel clearly has a lot of resources that it could and should be redirecting towards achieving 3nm fabrication ASAP. If Qualcomm replicates what Apple did with it's M series, Intel (and AMD) will get fucked.

Luckily Meteor Lake will be on Intels 4nm node, should be more efficient

Pretty soon you're gonna need a 220v 30A dryer outlet.

You can pull up to 1600W pretty safely on a residential circuit. That’s why it’s what all the space heaters top out at.
Although I doubt two 750W PSUs actually make more sense than a single 1500W PSU. Unless there end up being cooling reasons for separation?

CPUs and GPUs seem to go through cycles where they get new architecture that pulls massive power, and then they refine that architecture to be more efficient. I don't know how high power usage will go, but I am fairly confident that it will go back down.

Throwing more power at that game wont make it better either, CIG needs to fix their shit. They had over 10 years time, its more than late

posting in from the future-- i rebuilt mine with the i9 25000ATG with 1200XTX and i had to upgrade to the minimum 5,000W PSU. But this beast can manage the entire house climate control, solar and wind power systems, as well as run the spare M1A5 drone tank (excess supply on discount due to the Ukraine-Poland-Russian-China war). Only problem is the cyclic radiation from the nuke blooms, but at least my quad monitor setup (couldn't afford the standard 2.5m x 2.5m resolution) is enough for me to spot incoming KS33s and update sightings to the ABM network.

Yea, The last thing we want is a power hungry CPU. I already have sky rocketing electricity bills and so is the world too.
Intel is stupid pushing for this. They are always 3 yrs behind nowadays.
I am fine with my 5Ghz at 100W. That extra GHz is anyways not useful.

1 kw how does that translate to kWh?
At full load , that requires ~ 8 solar panels !
