I get that it's a braking system but how does this help in forest fires? The article is pretty vague on that (or I'm dumb)

The heat shielding material developed for LOFTID, in fact, has already been used to build a prototype heat shelter to help tackle forest fires. NASA has worked with the U.S. Forest Service's Missoula Technology and Development Center (MTDC) to develop more effective fire shelters to save lives, meaning their heat-resistant material could save human beings in space and on Earth.

It's a tent-like thing for when you don't have a way to retreat (very common with wild fire, fire can change direction very quick and encircle firefighter unexpectedly). In that case you can just hunker down and wait for rescues.
