Do investors understand that ASML is literally the only company on earth that builds cutting edge lithography equipment?

Yes, but the stock will still go down if they are making less money than expected.

The question is if an investor can deploy that capital elsewhere for better returns in the meantime, if they believe that the semi industry is cooling in the short term.

There's definitely a dip related to cryptocurrency mining drop off, but ASML is going no where, and has no competition.

It's curious that investors would abandon such a solid investment, unless they desperately need liquidity.

My hunch: most involved in finance don't actually understand the semiconductor industry, and drop the stocks they don't understand first.

In another thread someone was saying a specific company was dying because their stock was down 60%. Only problem is EVERY semiconductor stock is down that much. Seeing as I'm pretty sure we're still going to need chips going forward I'm pretty sure these companies are gonna be fine in the long run.

Intel, AMD and Nvidia are all off 50-60% ytd. They were crazy high before, and are still, on a price/income basis. Nobody seriously thinks any of the three is in danger of going bankrupt.

People are watching their 401k shrivel.
