Same can be said for most tech companies that got big

Sure but Google was the leader

to be fair, at least they started out with optimism towards their own workers and the workers liked it too

Reminds me of the Mac Miller song "So It Goes" -

"You could have the world in the palm of your hands You still might drop it."

Google had every opportunity, some of the smartest people in the world, developing cutting-edge models, for at least 6 years. What really happened? Dude fumbled so hard. It's still shocking for me to see.

Yeah - and it kind of started around the time they dropped their famous slogan. Seems that implying one will no longer operate ethically may have had some knock-on effects.

LaMDA + Google Conversations was "it." They quite literally had developed the cutting edge tech already. It's really astonishing to see that Conversations team was unilaterally fired. Same with Robotics.

My only thought is that the US Government gave them an ultimatum, e.g., either you develop AGI robots for us to use as military merchants, or you shut it down. And Google chose to shut it down. This is the only way I can see this happening. (Similar to Microsoft suddenly ditching VR).

Truly a WTF moment in history.

I think it's too easy to leap to a conspiracy theory when well known facts explain things perfectly well. Every one of the major tech companies is shedding tens of thousands of jobs. This is simply a market correction. They had massively over hired, massively overextended, all on the expectation that the ludicrous growth of the last 20 years could possibly continue. All while working on the technology that would make obsolete a lot of jobs, including those within the company.

I don't think it takes conspiracy to explain that they just can't afford it anymore.

Eh, IMO it's more than hand wavy conspiracy theory claims. People who work in certain sectors are presented with paths. And Google has chosen a path. We'll see what comes of it.

They’ll eliminate the perks, sure. Great. Will they also eliminate their famously toxic work environment? Will they eliminate their “slime mold” lack of focus that caused many of their projects to fail, projects that evaporated billions of their huge revenue dollars?

Too big to fail? Maybe

Too big to change the world again? Kinda seems like it

Investors, speculators, suppliers, contractors, vendors are the few I can think of.

Customers too. It's been noticed and noted a lot lately that Google's search quality has gone down significantly.
