I really reallly hope Framework succeeds. Their entire DIY repair/upgrade your own stuff is so consumer friendly, especially this case where you can repurpose your old parts into a little media server.

The issue is their CEO is not presentable. Keep him in the background and put in a CEO that can talk the talk. There is a reason geeks and nerds don’t make good CEOs.

Almost nobody makes good CEOs, particularly people who can get the job. Founders often can't cope with how the job changes as a company matures (and/or can't speak without putting their foots in their mouths), and "credible to a board of directors" seems to be more correlated with vocalizing the corporate bullshit hidden Markov model than actual sense.

Never heard of Framework, but I'm tempted to get one of their laptops just to support them.

I just preordered an AMD framework laptop the other day. I’m excited to put it together.

I've had one since September 2021. Still a great piece of hardware, better now that there's full kernel support.

This is awesome! I'd love to swap my 15.6" gaming laptop into a more permanent set up now that I'm done traveling constantly.

I can't be the only one that has old laptops laying around that are still good machines, but no longer really useful as laptops. Being able to swap them into a thin-client-esque case and use them as small home servers, etc. would be awesome.

I think more cities should have something like FreeGeek.

I think it would be better if we had a trade-in option. You trade in your old motherboard for a xx% off of your new motherboard, then the company could use those boards on refurbished products or sold them in their store as second-hand items. If the board is broken beyond repair, the company could send them to professional companies that deal with e-waste.

The old boards simply would do more in their hands compared to ordinary users.

Framework is planning to offer Marketplace option like ebay but more focused so youd be able to buy and sell older boards and components. Since its also focused so a good chance of finding and seller framework parts there. We shall see when they launch.
