Excerpts from the article:

“Founded in 2012, Synchron is part of the burgeoning brain-computer interface, or BCI, industry. A BCI is a system that deciphers brain signals and translates them into commands for external technologies. Perhaps the best-known name in the space is Neuralink, thanks to the high profile of founder Elon Musk, who is also the CEO of Tesla, SpaceX and Twitter.”

“In August 2020, the Food and Drug Administration granted Synchron the Breakthrough Device designation, which is for medical devices that have the potential to provide improved treatment for debilitating or life-threatening conditions. The following year, Synchron became the first company to receive an Investigational Device Exemption from the FDA to conduct trials of a permanently implantable BCI in human patients.

Synchron is enrolling patients in an early feasibility trial, which aims to show that the technology is safe to put in humans. Six patients will be implanted with Synchron’s BCI during the study, and Chief Commercial Officer Kurt Haggstrom said the company is currently about halfway through.”

“While many competitors have to implant their BCIs through open-brain surgery, Synchron relies on a less invasive approach that builds on decades of existing endovascular techniques, the company said.

Synchron’s BCI is inserted through the blood vessels, which Oxley calls the “natural highways” into the brain. Synchron’s stent, called the Stentrode, is fitted with tiny sensors and is delivered to the large vein that sits next to the motor cortex. The Stentrode is connected to an antenna that sits under the skin in the chest and collects raw brain data that it sends out of the body to external devices.

Peter Yoo, senior director of neuroscience at Synchron, said since the device is not inserted directly into the brain tissue, the quality of the brain signal isn’t perfect. But the brain doesn’t like being touched by foreign objects, Yoo said, and the less invasive nature of the procedure makes it more accessible.”

“For patients with severe paralysis or degenerative diseases such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or ALS, Synchron’s technology can help them regain their ability to communicate with friends, family and the outside world, whether through typing, texting or even accessing social media.”

“In December 2021, Oxley handed over his Twitter account to a patient named Philip O’Keefe, who has ALS and struggles to move his hands. About 20 months earlier, O’Keefe was implanted with Synchron’s BCI.

“hello, world! Short tweet. Monumental progress,” O’Keefe tweeted on Oxley’s page, using the BCI.”

I'm tired of all the apparent low-effort excuses "This will help people with paralysis"

Sure, but it will also help you control most humans if you somehow persuade the world to get this done. Considering how well we reacted to taking an experimental vaccine willingly, it wouldn't take too much effort.

Free-will is the most luxurious item a human can possess.

This has nothing to do with vaccines.

Also, if you're going to bitch about vaccines, then I never want to see you eating ultraprocessed foods because you willingly ate those without knowing all the secret ingredients

I am all for this. Anything that can expand my own computer use. You guys should be all for it as well, because you will get old and decrepit one day, and I doubt your desire to use computers will decline. Do you think computer accessibility is going to be just baked in by that point? To an extent, there will be some generic features such as screen readers, or color, blindness mode, or voice activation. However, I doubt that any of those things will make up for the abilities that everyone here will eventually lose.

If the OS can't be swapped for linux I'm gonna pass.

After all the sketchy stuff Microsoft and Amazon have done over the years the last thing I want is one of theirs in my head. That goes double for Microsoft where adds are now plastered on the fricken desktop.

I'd trust Neuralink twice over before either if those monsters.

They’re going to be amazing! Obviously, not right away of course. At first, implants will be used to relieve common brain related ailments. After some trial period, they’ll be introduced to improve certain cognitive abilities. Eventually, a one for all implant will be offered and it will be so cool and useful and honestly you’ll be miles behind if you don’t have the chip. Errs of chat gpt style “ai” tech will be years in the past. All but forgotten. Overshadowed by the brilliance of this tech and its ability to finally connect human directly into the entirety of current human knowledge. There will be subsidies and new credit vehicles developed in order to push this tech out to absolutely everyone. And, absolutely everyone will want one. Need one! How else are they going to convince everyone to get the chip?

These emerging companies’ formal filings and requests were submitted and approved during the height of the pandemic. Notable

The technology subreddit is actually very anti-technology in general I’ve noticed. Case in point, the anti-cult of personality around here with some people dominating so much.

This particular project could enhance many human lives in ways previously locked behind the category of science fiction. Let’s just slap the big scary names of some investors on this thing to get the clicks.

Of course bad rich people are involved with financing. That’s how capitalism works. There is no ethical ultra rich capitalist. They all do horrible things to become and remain rich and powerful because they do not create anything; only take and hoard. Naturally their involvement is bad, but it isn’t the tech that is bad. It’s the economics. It’s the politics.

Throw a French style party and let near fully paralyzed people independently mobilize operate to some extent again without the subtext being “how is this going to be used to enslave the entire colony of worker ants.”

Which has what exactly to do with my point? And Musk has less of an agenda? If you look at the track record it would seem Gates has an agenda of making the world better and Musk a track record of just wanting to get his way. So if I had to choose..

IWontFukWithU t1_j9a4hwn wrote

Say what now ?! Do u know that, the Melinda gates foundation actually called for no vaccines for covid, loobbyed the prices to be jacked up all over the world, they call up for population decrease. I’m just naming a few.

Regardless of musk going out of his way, 2 things he is specially good at is beeing honest and he is actually smart. Now when he talks anything besides tech. I usually don’t listen because he has his opinions that I do not relate to. But just for u to compare, musk says the one of the biggest problems humanity faces is the birthdate, Melinda gates they back scientific docs that support the decrease of humans.

Just like BP SHELL and other big oils , supported scientific docs saying the global warming didn’t exist.

You now “kinda see” that track cuz it’s what they want u to see ;)

OverthinkingMadMan t1_j9a5zjq wrote

So a foundation that put money towards producing covid vaccines said no vaccines? That sounds absurd. Why would they lobby to get the price higher, if they didn't want them to begin with? And they are giving away free vaccines in developing nations. Bill Gates even called for us to be ready in case a pandemic broke out. This is the first time I've heard your conspiracy theory, since every one else of the nut jobs is screaming that Bill Gates wants to kill us with vaccines. Most conspiracies tell us that Gates wants to control us with the vaccines and wants to force us to take them. Your take is the other way around. Yeah, you need to actually show proof of that, and not just say "Google it".

Musk, honest? Man, you need to actually follow what is going on. Remember how he banned a lot of journalists from Twitter, saying they doxxed him? They didn't! Or the guy that shared his plane information, that he said got him stalked. He didn't come from his plane at that time! Or how he held his dying child in his arms? Well he didn't! Man what an honest guy. But sure, he is smart in some areas. Others? Not at all.

Bill Gates has said that the best way to lower birth raters is to get people better health care, make them richer and to give them clean water. What a terrible way to lower birth rates. Man what a bad guy. You mention oil companies. What incentive does Gates have to lower the population?
