Is there a reason you can't stay where you are?

Yes, so here is why. I a have two dependents, one is a newborn. Missouri fire codes require me to have 2 bedrooms and I was not aware of this until I went to renew the lease for my current one bedroom. We could really use the space anyways I just wish I knew this. Missouri law states that even though I have a newborn, I can only stay here until the current lease ends before that ordinance or whatever it’s called takes place. I was planning on living here but that has changed quite unexpectedly.

Can’t help but I’m here to wish you luck. Fuck the system keeping good people down.

You can try Westwood on Battlefield. Have been here for about a year and we love the place.

Look into Wooten properties, they are a equal opportunity housing, so you may have more luck finding something in your price range. From my experience they only have asked for proof of income. However, not all property managers are the same, and anecdotally, myself as well as others, haven't had the best experience with Wooten and Security deposits. , So make sure to take plenty of photos on move in to prove, if any damages exist before move in there photo evidence and written evidence.

Peppertree apartments suck, but they will take you. If they took me, they will take you. My 2 bedroom apartment was $850/mo

Check with At Home reality. They work with people with credit issues.

idk if there's any left but Wooten had some apartments that are around 600/mo for a 2 bedroom over on east battlefield

You will have a roof over your head. Doesn't matter if you broke 100 leases, no one deserves to be homeless. Especially with a newborn. I know I'm just a random redditor but I'm also a mom that struggled with housing, depression, and little kids in spf. It can be really isolating and feel like you're over your head. If you want to pm I am available to talk. If you want help finding resources too I'm good at that. I hope you find some peace and space to breathe ❤️

It may be worth contacting legal services of southern Missouri. They have social workers who can sometimes (not always) help with locating income based housing, and they can also help you apply for ERA Emergency Housing funds and other beneficial programs. You could also contact or go to the O’Rielly center for hope, or go through Community Partnership of the Ozarks or Catholic Charities of Southern Missouri

I live in Silversprings apartments and I pay $650 for a 2 bed 1 1/2 bath. It’s a decent place and pretty fairly priced. They also do month by month renting for an extra fee. Hope this helps!

Haselhorst has worked with some folks I know in similar situations. The places aren’t great but they are cheap and they’ll take an extra deposit to offset risk.

This source doesn’t specifically say it’s a fire code but it’s the law regardless. Just another way to keep people from getting ahead of you ask me. It would mean so much for me to renew for 6 months and get ahead but because of these laws, it isn’t allowed. And unfortunately this company doesn’t currently have any 2 bedroom options available. I wish they did because I would just stay with the same place. I had no idea about the occupancy thing per bedroom. It makes sense but I think there should be an exception with a newborn. But since I had him 2 months ago and my lease is up in one month, I don’t have much time to plan. It’s stressful and I had never heard of a law so ridiculous prior to last week.

Ah, I see. "Allows for the landlord to enforce 2 people/bedroom."

Sounds like a shit landlord tbh. I've never heard of somebody getting in trouble/not being able to renew a lease because they had a baby in their bedroom. Many parents keep the crib in their room for awhile after birth, makes getting up in the middle of the night easier.

Seems like your landlord wants an excuse to boot you and jack up prices for the next person. I'm sorry you're in this situation. Housing in this town is abysmal.

Not sure how this comment will show up in the chain however what the OP is talking about are occupancy restrictions. You can absolutely rent a 1 bedroom, pregnant with a dependant as the pregnancy doesn't "count". However, as the OP just learned when anyone goes to renew the same occupancy rules exist and now they have 3 people in 1 bedroom which breaks the 2 person to bedroom rule.

Yeah, idk what they have in terms of cheaper units, but my wife and I are super happy with At Home Here. We have good income, but gnarly credit, and they rented to us no problem. They're generally prompt and responsive to their online maintenance portal. Most of the time they just leave us alone. And, I acknowledge that this is meaningless to most people, but it is very important to us: the only time we have been the only lgbtq people in the building was in the deepest depths of the renovations when only two units were occupied. We're not as friendly with the girl across the hall as we were with the gay ladies who used to live above us, but that's mostly down to her being standoffish. On the off chance you're reading this 202, we might be the old folks in the building in our 30s, but the blue haired gay couple across the hall needs gaming buddies <3

This was my experience too! They're extremely responsive. Our whole HVAC system went out this summer and they immediately brought me a one room AC and replaced the whole system within the week.

I have since bought my own home, and they worked with my mortgage company too to help me.

Oof my At Home experience was absolutely horrendous to the point that the property owner let us break lease 4 months early at no cost and no official record of it. And I know several other people who had similar terrible experiences with them…

Lake Shore has a few units available but will be closer to $1000 a month. Best apartments I’ve lived in while in Springfield though. Great staff and never had any issues. Actively helped us make a quick move from our old place that was a hazard to live at and even worked with us to moved units within the complex when our dog had a medical diagnosis that resulted in us having to move to a first floor unit. That's wild. When was that? I noticed a decent number of older negative reviews when we were doing research preparing to move. But they always seem to have some supporters in new topics posted since I started seriously following the sub.

Don't issues like breaking leases and evictions fall off at 7 years? Why is that still on your record from 2012?

2

Consistent_Speech713 t1_j5p9qmz wrote

That’s a great question!! I saw a post on Facebook where a woman had an eviction on her record from like 17 years ago and she is living in her car in Springfield even though she has good income AND credit. I really really hope she found a place. Luckily a broken lease is easier to deal with but no, it doesn’t disappear. I don’t know why it doesn’t and I don’t know how to make it go away but it is on the record probably forever. I was always told that stuff falls off but that isn’t what has happened in my case and for others that I’ve heard of.
