what is a Dark Tourist? and needing directions to where? could you have been any more vague?

Is someone interested in places historically associated with death and tragedy like murder sites famous graves the odd and obscure that's what I'm needing directions to in Springfield

lmao good luck, the only major thing we have is the springfield three and since they've never found the bodies, there are no graves for them. the crime scene house was sold and is a private residence who has no problems calling police. next best would be pythian castle but it's got it's own "ghost tours" you get into, they close it down every night and security is fair. after that would be acid tunnels but I wouldn't trust going in there alone at night, even with a camera and flash light.

There's all the Civil War stuff (plaques downtown, Wilson's Creek Battlefield), the lynching plaque on the square, and several places where the Trail of Tears went through. The cemetary at Glenstone and Seminole is the only National Cemetary with soldiers from both the Union and the Confederacy. The Albino Farm has stories, but last I knew you can't get to it any more. Spook Light down near Joplin.

there was, and the museum on the square might have info about it, but the only notable thing on the square itself is the plaque about the lynchings of Fred Coker and Horace Duncan

The shootout was on the square between Wild Bill Hickok and Davis Tutt over a pocket watch lost in a poker game. There is a marker showing where Wild Bill stood and it has a diagram of the shootout.

As far as I know it's the only historical case of a movie-style stand-and-draw type duel, it's fairly famous.

Break into the government cheese cave

There are the Jordan Creek Tunnels, aka the Vampire Tunnels. You can schedule a tour with The Watershed Committee, I believe.

Then there's Winoka Lodge aka the Girl Scout camp where three girls were raped and murdered. I don't know much about that one, but maybe someone else does. Probably not something you should go poking around.

Don't forget the Young Brother's Massacre in Brookline.

Winona lodge isn't where the three scouts were murdered, that is down near Mayes County in OK. It is often mistakenly claimed to have happened at Winoka, but no verified murders too place at the lodge

Yes, it’s still there. But it’s also just a regular neighborhood and the neighbors get frustrated when people play tourist (can’t blame them). Keep that in mind if you go, it’s easy enough to find the address though.

Look up the gristly murders of Gary and Jan Tyrrell (2014). I don't remember the address, (Edit: They lived on Greenbriar) but their lovely home was on the SE side of town. I suppose someone else lives there now.

John Feeney was a local school teacher who’s family was killed in their home in the 90’s. I believe the house is still around and you can find the address in an old news article from the time it happened by googling his name, mrdrs, 90s. I never hear anyone talk about this but he was not charged and their killer was never found.

Jan was a lovely, kind woman and a personal friend of my family. Your remark is in poor taste.

You might also check out the Gilloiz theater. I don't know of any homicides but one of the projectionists died during a midnight movie showing and his spirit is said to haunt the theater.

And the theater has been restored and is just really lovely even without the death but the death and ghost story is kind of cool.

He was charged but found not guilty. There’s also a podcast out about it on Ozarks True Crime, if you want to hear about it.

Winoka Lodge has been fenced off and gated. All of the previous structures have been removed. A new structure/residence is in its place. I would recommend viewing it from the appropriate side of the fence now.

One of the most famous in recent memory is the Springfield Three.

The house is at 1717 E. Delmar Street

As I remember it, Gary and Mr. Porter, who was convicted and is now serving 2 life sentences for the Tyrrell's murders, had worked together for several years as teachers and administrators of public schools in the area. They were close friends, and when Mr. Porter asked for a loan from the Tyrrells, it was generously and openly given. But Mr. Porter didn't repay the loan.

On the night of the Tyrrell's murder, Mr. Porter had asked to meet with Gary at a restaurant or some such. Gary stood him up, because he believed, or knew, that Mr. Porter wanted more money. At that time, Gary was beginning to feel that Mr. Porter was taking unjust advantage of the Tyrrells' generosity.

Porter then went to the Tyrrell's home, rang the doorbell, and was invited (or forced his way?) inside. Porter asked for money, Gary refused. To make a much more complicated story short and to-the-point, Mr. Porter beat Gary severely, and then shot him twice. He bludgeoned Jan to death with one of Gary's collectible items, a walrus tusk. Then Porter stole silver coins, valued at $18 K (not nearly enough to cover the large gambling debt for which it was later discovered Porter wanted the 2nd loan from the Tyrrells.)

I was in the McDonald's next to R&k coins one afternoon grabbing something to eat, I noticed two gentlemen in suits watching R&K.. I didn't put the two together till after the conviction... what a horrible story, and thing to do.

Feely house is on Nottingham..I almost bought it until I saw who owned it. Kids toys everywhere and u could tell someone lived there when I went..but..the bedrooms where they were killed were painted. I had a creepy feeling in there before I even knew what house I was in.

I just thought of this one. The George Revelle murder in Fremont Hills. Old George was actually exonerated but ya know. He was the mayor of Fremont Hills and president or some big muckity muck at a bank (can't remember exactly). I don't even know if the house is still there but it was a pretty notorious murder for Springfield.

Springfield hit its biggest population boom in about the mid 20th century, which is evident by the old architecture beginning at about Grand and moving northward. Beyond Chestnut is a lot of neglect and decay. Further southward has more recent developments, but nobody seems too keen on doing anything about slumlords and affronts to human spirit on the north side.

The gradient is surreal. Just drive north along National, beginning at James River.

I don't get Dark Tourism. Like.....go to any major city. Stand on any random spot on the sidewalk. There you go, you are within a hundred feet or so of where someone has died. Once of those building adjacent to you, probably more than one of them, someone has died in it.

Throw a dart at the map. Unless you are in a very very remote area, where ever that dart hit, some one lived there, died there, or very close by. Something fucked up and spooky or bad happened either right exactly there or very close to there at some point to someone.

Seems to me like pretty much any random spot could be "dark tourism" depending on how much research you are able to do and how detailed the records are.

Unless you are talking about specifically like old prisons or abandoned orphanages or psych wards or whatever, that I do get, that's pretty cool, but if dark tourism is just "someone died here" or "something fucked up happened here".....well that's pretty much everywhere that people have been.
