I couldn't edit the original post because of the photos. First thank everyone here for their suggestion, tips, and even jokes yesterday. It is good to know that however bad this city can seem sometimes, there are still plenty of decent people here.

Thanks to some of you coming forward and a little sleuthing of our own, we found the person. Once we think what we have is air tight we will talk to the police but I am not quite sure what to expect.

I mostly wanted to thank everyone and this community. If anything substantial comes of this I can provide an update.

Update: a police report was made when this happened. They provided an online link to the report where we can submit info. We provided all the photos we had from her using our cards. Nothing was ever added to the report because no officer has been assigned to the case. Since then we have came forward with additional photos, the person's name, matching tattoos to the photos from the Gas station and her pictures on her FB, casenet and Springfield mugshot entries, her address, photos of the jeep at the address and more. No officer will talk to us. No updates were made to the report. I am pretty frustrated with the situation. We got our money back from the bank, our credit is locked, and we are in the process of getting new SSN cards which will stay in a fireproof box we have for documents. I am pretty petty and don't want to drop it but I am not the only one effected and respecting the wishes of others not to rock the boat.

Yea I've known people who had full-face surveillance camera footage of the person in the act, and cops still told them they can't do anything about it. They're all useless at anything but perpetuating cycles of poverty to insulate the ruling class from real people's struggles.

Someone burglarized my neighbor with a U-Haul in broad daylight. I saw furniture and stuff being moved out but figured it was someone moving out with it being broad daylight and a U-Haul. A different neighbor has cameras and had the plate number of the U-Haul. All the cops needed to do was find out who rented the U-Haul. They did nothing. Neighbor never got any of his stuff back.

It's so disappointing, and frankly infuriating, that you were the victim and you're expected to track down the perpetrator, collect evidence, and be able to nail down who did it before the police will even consider doing anything...you know the people who are paid a full salary, numerous benefits, and a pension at taxpayer expense to prevent , investigate, and bring to prosecution criminals.

I'm sorry this happened to you.

Same thing happened in our driveway about 2 years ago. We had video ofnthe people, as did our neighbors who had their vehicle broken into too....Police showed up. Looked at the video (wouldn't even humor us by accepting a copy of it).

Makes paying my property tax this month a little bit bigger pill to swallow.

Yep. Countless stories of "I have find my device active, I can show you within 50 feet of where it is, and I know the person who has it " met with "No can do" from the police.

I really don't get it. They will blow a door off its hinges, shoot the dogs, drag kids out of their beds in the middle of the night over a suspected weed dealer, but you hand them a thief and they couldn't care less.

I do not understand it either, I hear arguments for being understaffed and overwhelmed. But even when all the leg work is done for them. Over the years I've just had to redefine what the role of a police officer is for me and it is not protector or crime fighter. They do not exist to protect the interest of common people.

You can expect the police to do absolutely nothing. They don't exist to help, only to keep you doing what your supposed to and make you pay more money. Had a wallet stolen, confirmed exact ATM they used, had cameras, gave to police, they closed it a month later with no "leads" never tried to do anything what so ever.

They’re probably trying to ID who the person is by the ATM video/photos, if the person’s face is even visible. And they don’t get closed, they get suspended pending further leads. Banks are decent but some gas stations take months to provide police with surveillance video.

Stop by the municipal court and file a citizen's complaint. Provide a copy of the photos and whatever else you've got. No guarantees it will go anywhere, and it's muni court, so the worst that will be done is a low fine and maybe some jail time....but it's something more to do than wait on cops to work on it.

SPD is 90 officers short. They won't do jack unless someone gets murdered

Might i suggest contacting ky3 and have them do a story. Seems like you embarrass the police in the news then they are willing to do something about it.

They actually did reach out to us, we were going to be interviewed today. They had to postpone and offered to do it later today I believe but the other party involved backed out and asked not to do it. I don't agree with the decision but like I said in the update, just respecting their wishes

If you would like to apply for the job there are plenty of openings. I don’t agree with your opinion on “redefining the role of police” but it is yours. I think anyone who wants to judge from the outside should at least try to do a ride along. They are incredibly short officers so lower priority calls like theft will be on the back burner while they deal with violent crimes or domestic situations which are very common for Springfield.

My vehicle breakin/burglary report from 2019 remains unaddressed too. It was parked right underneath a security camera at a domestic violence shelter. The shelter won't release the footage to just anyone and encouraged me to file a police report for that reason, but nothing ever came of it.

the_honeyman t1_iyrwsng wrote

Even a decade ago the police didn't do shit about theft, unless it was from a big corporate store or a McMansion in Ravenwood. "They are short officers" is just the latest excuse for them to not do anything at all to help the average person.

Most police officers are really made up of the average people, coming from mostly middle class or low income families so I don’t understand how people think they don’t help those people. Also most crime happens to low income people from low income people.
