Some places I personally enjoy.

##On C-street:

-Cafe Cusco is good (and is my all-around favorite restaurant), and they have a nice lunch menu.

-Pizza House also has lunch specials.

##Downtown:

-Civil Kitchen, nice variety of items. I like their bacon/apple/waffle sandwich and flash fried kale.

-Zayka, good Indian food and a lunch buffet.

-Greek Belly, delicious gyros, fresh meat.

##Near downtown:

-Rama Thai cafe, good lunch in a neat setting (old house).

-The Dugout, it’s a bar, but their smoked wings are really good. I also like their Cuban.

-Bambino’s (on Delmar), good Italian food and you can specific lunch/dinner portions.

##South side:

-The Sub Shop (on Seminole), great sandwiches.

-Sakura, Bento box lunch specials, but they are closed on Mondays.

-Koriya, good Korean food.

Char, black sheep, and flame are good places to avoid. They are over priced with underpaid staff and very transphobic

Source: I worked for them and know the family

If you like McAlister's, you might try Neighbor's Mill on Independence. Same kind of stuff, a little better quality. Plus they have pastries!

Corner 21! Delicious and more authentic than the rest of Springfield’s Chinese offerings.

Try Cesar's Old Mexico. Place slaps. I have also been really fond of a joint called Momo lately.

Value is for the customer to decide. I’d argue that if these restaurants have been in the black for so long, their pricing must be fine. I worked for the J family and did not think I was underpaid; and every employee may leave and quickly find a new role based on the industry right now.

Cafe Cusco, That Lebanese Place, and Gilmore’s Tea Room are all tasty (in my opinion) and all on Commercial Street. I also love Thai Express, though I have not been there since they moved to Republic Road. Also Bambino’s, near Phelps Grove Park, is really good.

Pampa Empanadas is a must try that hasn't been mentioned. All of their empanadas are so damn good.

I would add Karai to this list. Same owners as Haruno so the sushi/hand rolls are excellent, but the ramen is top-notch.

That's one of the reasons I find reddit really cringey. If the crowd disagrees with something it can be downvoted and made to disappear. Doesn't exactly lead to open conversation when contrasting opinions can be buried. You learn more in life from the people you disagree with.

That being said, I'm surprised there were (and continue to be) downvotes. It's a pretty popular restaurant and not at all controversial. It's not like I recommended mexican villa or something. :P

After my wife and I tried Cafe Cusco and Van Gogh's for the first time in 2021, my friend was telling us about how we need to avoid them because the owner was very much against COVID policies and wasn't doing anything to protect their staff/patrons. We ended up avoiding the restaurants for a few months until I tried to verify those claims myself and couldn't find a source at all.

Seeing the initial downvotes on the comment above reminded me of that.

  • Bao Bao - Chinese
  • Pancho's - Mexican
  • City Butcher - BBQ

Ah, good to know, so there was a kernel of truth to it. My friend was telling us about him losing his parents and that not changing his views.

Either way, glad he came around, but sad for the circumstances.

Oh wow, I didn't know about his parents getting sick. That sucks about his dad. I never got to meet the dad, but back when his mom was helping out she'd always make sure to give me a big hug before I left. She's a sweet lady.

Last time I was at Zayka was late last year and the buffet still wasn't back, but they had a combination plate that featured the 4-5 most popular items along with some naan and sauces and rice pudding, and it was pretty filling.

If the Sub Shop is what I think it is, there's also one downtown. Good call on Greek Belly, I really like that place. The owner has had a booth at the C-Street culture fest a couple of times and he seems pretty nice on top of making some pretty good gyros.

FYI Kai has a couple of their bento boxes back on the menu. Teriyaki chicken and beef. Sadly, no salmon last time I went.

I might be biased but OMO japnese soul food in chesterfield village has really good sushi, bento boxes, and yaki soba.

K Fried chicken is my go to spot for good bulgogi and fried chicken. The spicy pork bulgogi is amazing, and their fried chicken sauced/non sauced is better than any other fried chicken in town.

This is late but Springfield has some of my favorite restaurants of all the states I've lived. I really like FLAVOR.

  1. Cafe Cusco almost NEVER disappoints and the one time they did , a server hand delivered a complimentary item to my place of work when she was off the clock (s/o to Reana!) I love to try new things on this menu. My favorites are the Trout Salad, the Pollo con Rayas, the Wings and the Chocolate Torte for dessert.
  2. Zayka-my son loves this place and we never have to order much and are always full after like three bites lol.
  3. Lindberg's-My favorite burgers in Springfield and they had this bread pudding dessert for a while that seriously dangerous.
  4. Tea Bar & Bites for their baked goods, good god.
  5. Cesars-This place is still always packed after all these years. Last week I had two fajita style papusas and was floored.
  6. I'm surprised no one listed Flame...I love the ambience of this place and their bartenders have always been very willing to strike up a conversation. It's pricy so I stick to the appetizer menu and usually order the sliders and the fried portabellos.
  7. For sushi I'd go to Kai or Haruno....I've tried a few other places in town and been disappointed.
  8. Rama Thai's curries HIT.
  9. Still looking for really good pizza in Springfield but I'm picky about that anyway (I like Chicago style)
