That's why banning athletes from Russia and Belarus actually makes sense. It's never about them personally, everybody is aware that it's not their fault and they (probably) don't support the war. However, sport was always used for propaganda and for pushing nationalism.

Oh Christ, we should have banned jazz music and McDonalds when the totally illegal war in Iraq broke out in 2003 based on total lies.

Isn’t it removing flags part of the same issue? Reactionary propaganda, why are the US and UK flags acceptable during the times they’re bombing innocent lives?

To answer your first question, it really is not. First argument is this very article, where supporters show up either way and start doing pro-war propaganda. Second argument is that sporting victories are consumed for propaganda internally in Russia, so removing the flag has absolutely no effect. As for your second question, it's a classic example of "whataboutism" (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Whataboutism) and I am not going to reply to it.

Not whataboutism, more pointing bias. I think all invasions should be punished, and hypocrisy needs to be called out

Actually text book "whataboutism": "Common accusations include double standards, and hypocrisy, but it can also be used to relativize criticism of one's own viewpoints or behaviors. (A: "Long-term unemployment often means poverty in Germany." B: "And what about the starving in Africa and Asia?")."

I haven’t brought something unrelated, I am talking about having a sustained stance on human rights. Should be broader than just punishing two nationalities. I understand it’s a touchy topic and most people from Europe/US feel like calling out bias is pointless, but I think there should be more principled approaches to human rights

Lmao ya while the us gov push for war I don’t associate or think about war when I see the us flag and probably a lot of other people too, but if I see the Z flag I know for sure the guy holding it wants people dead

Ask those bombed by the US if they think of war when they see the flag

fanasup t1_j5zurxg wrote

Ok but that doesn’t change the fact that what matters is the intention behind the holder of the flag

On that we can agree, but nice try changing the subject

Not rly changing the subject cuz that was my whole point from the start lmao if u think the way u do then u must hate every country then which basically means there’s no point even trying to have a discussion with u since u just hold the most basic opinion and provides nothing that everyone don’t already know
