So based on this criteria Ted Bundy would have been Arizonan of the Year at one point?

She played for a rich guy that allowed her to get some privileges that were revoked without her knowledge. She was also unaware that she had cannabis in her suitcase as she was in a hurry. Russia's legal system is not setup to be fair...That's all I'm really saying. Regardless of if she's innocent or not, their legal system was not supportive of being a fair trial/outcome.

Flipmstr2 t1_j2rtyjm wrote
So she was allowed to break the law and then at some point she wasn’t allowed to break the law? You are not allowed to carry any THC on a US commercial flight. Please tell me a scenario where stashing your THC in a suitcase you travel with is a good idea. Also everybody knows that Russia has a messed up legal system. Even a show such as Stranger Things portrays it that way. Yet even when traveling there she didn’t consider that “ hey I stash my THC containing product in my suitcase, I better remove them as I am heading to Russia and they have gulags in Siberia.”
Yes all the things you say may be true. And, I too, feel that the legalization of small amounts of weed should be legal to carry on ones person at all times. All I am saying is we should stop praising her stupidity. Use her as propaganda of how strict and unfair Russia is, sure. But stop idolizing her for committing a crime and getting caught.

She didn't know/realize she had THC. She also wasn't on a domestic US flight. I said 'knowingly', and not suggesting she's innocent by any means, just that the punishment and the means of convictions is a bit suspicious.
ultralane t1_j2s5iwk wrote
I believe so, but I can't be 100% sure. My point is more that she failed to realize it was in her position at that time, therefore she didn't know she had committed a crime while committing a crime. That's assuming if you give the guilty plea water, which I would discount considering the lawyer and the court was compromised to some extent (the court was very compromised).

The fact she had it on her at all In Russia is beyond dumb. I heard a story once from Snoop Dogs head of security saying “hardest thing he ever did was trying to keep snoop off weed while in Russia” because he knew they didn’t mess around. If they knew it she should have. Incredibly stupid, In my opinion.
ultralane t1_j2s5yjd wrote
I was only referring to the Russian event, not her personal. Sorry if this caused confusion. I am not saying she's an angel or other people should have gone home first. All valid criticisms which I would agree on some level with.

Fuck this piece of shit clown garbage.
Flipmstr2 t1_j2sbdun wrote
How the hell does she not know she has it. And I was bringing up domestic flights for two reasons
- she was probably on a domestic flight at some point (Arizona to NY perhaps?) with the THC. This is illegal. Or did she procure the THC while in Russia? That is illegal as well and then would nullify the “I really didn’t know I had THC on me.” argument.
- international flights rules are usually stricter. I don’t know what they were for her flight but it is on her for finding out.
I agree it was a big front and politicized. Her stupidity did not warrant the punishment. But her stupidity should also not warrant the award.

I think you're right to have skepticism about a case where there were motivations to take a public figure and have them say whatever, especially Russia in its current state. She very quite possibly did it intentionally. Maybe she did it accidentally. Or maybe someone said "this is what you have to say. Plead guilty and say you did it on accident, and they'll let you go." And then they didn't.

Iirc, he was an extremely small amount that would so its possible she just missed it. Also, she benefited from her employer being real powerful that gave her more leniency for some rules that she may not have known existed. If you don't know Russian, then it would be damn near impossible to know the regulations by the letter of the word. I would imagine that her having THC was previously allowed for flights in Russian because of her employer said so.
Edit: Some of the post is a bit speculative, but I don't think its farfetched and gives some benefit of the doubt when people are hellbent on running her over with a bus.
ultralane t1_j2sj1h9 wrote
Based on what I've read, the hope was that if she plead guilty, the process would play out faster in getter her home. Turned out true, but Russian was more than willing to keep her.
ultralane t1_j2sjirf wrote
Snoop Dog didn't work for someone as powerful that Griner did (in Russia at least). I have no doubt that Griner's employer allowed her to play by a different set of rules/laws without her knowledge.
