Great team and run they are on right now.

Are people upset 50% of their roster was born outside of the country? Don’t know the norms of World Cup country but that seems high.

With how far they have come, it's obvious they are wetting their shirts and giving their all to the country. Maybe not born there, but very much culturally Moroccan as the diaspora abroad keeps the traditions and links to the old country

surprised nigeria never made it this far, good luck!

Ghana should have made it to the semi finals, that game was stolen from them.

Also over 50 percent of their players aren’t from Morocco

Edit: you guys are downvoting a fact

I think Morocco was also the first African country to reach the quarter finals of a World Cup, but it was a while ago.

It's a strong team, period.

They are strong, they have a very good goalkeeper, some of their players play in some of the best clubs, like Ziyech or Hakimi.

So don't speak of miracle or slap on the face, it's a team worthy of losing to, they didn't win by chance 5 times in a row and they have their shot at the world cup.

Now, France it's a very strong team. VERY strong but in Football, especially at that high level, anything is possible :)

Romain Saïss honors people like me who bear a French first name and and Arabic last name, born and raised in France yet proud of Morrocan heritage.

There is an ongoing big push by Morocco to have a competent training center for youngsters in Salé but Morocco will not hate anything from its diaspora, would it be Dutch or French or Canadian (Bono).

This team to me symbolise how despite being from different backgrounds, when everyone gets on the same page, it's possible to do great things. Together.

What a joy to witness them succeed.

That’s questionable. Most countries in the Americas consider it one whole continent with it many ways of divide it (Latin-Anglo, North, Center and South, with Mexico in north or center America), but, for the Olympics for example, it is just one continent. And i think in some point it was talked about how “Eurasia” was also just one continent, with political divisions.

Now, if we are talking about confederations, yes, you are 100% right.

It’s gonna be a hell of a game!

all due respect to Morocco, who have played incredibly and deserve each of their wins… France is on another level right now. They played like shit against England and it was still enough.

I’m rooting for the upset still. Tuesday cant come soon enough 🙌

Beginning_Rip_4570 t1_izr3dks wrote

Thats tough. Argentina is a more exciting team and Messi has a chance to score or assist literally every time he touches the ball, but Croatia is very solid. “Brilliant on the basics.” And it’s not out of nowhere; they lost to France in the finals in 2018.

Fuck it, Argentina 2-1 in extra time

I loved how the team played. The played with so much passion and fought for every ball. Grats to the team, it was well deserved!

What I really didn't like tough were the fans. The entire time Portugal had the ball the Morocco fans were whistling. It was really annoying and not good sportsmanship.

ezomar t1_izrd2w6 wrote

Whoever is upset at that is a weirdo. Considering a player like Hakimi could play for Spain and chooses not too says a lot about how he appreciates his roots and culture

unerosvp t1_izrlwz0 wrote

They all have Moroccan passport since their parents are Moroccans. Just because they're born in another country doesn't mean they ONLY have that nationality. A lot of people have two nationalities and it's okay, it doesn't make you a lesser citizen.

chuchofreeman t1_izs94l2 wrote

Honestly Morocco got lucky with that goal. Portugal was on the offensive basically the whole second half but Morocco's good defense and luck paid off. No hate but I prefer more football than their style of play. Congratulations for them though.

Why do people need to bring this up every time? All the first world countries currently in the World Cup have similar or the same situation with a ton of foreign born players. If you’d like let’s take out all the “foreign” players out of France, Netherlands etc

We always have to bring down 3rd world countries when they’re doing better than us.

H0vis t1_izsiu7o wrote

I hope it's them or Croatia that wins it, but I hope they don't meet in the final because that'd be the most boring game in history.

Sorry bro my bad. I know you weren’t bringing them down. Just got a little emotional because I’ve seen some other comments and it’s been driving me crazy. Accept my apology. I’m rooting for them so hard this WC.

Not sure what point you are trying to make. But none of us are an authority on how a person can identify culturally. He did choose to represent Morocco, he likely shares a significant number of cultural values picked from home regardless of what language he uses. At the end of the day, only he can say what he feels is his cultural identity.

Angelusflos t1_izt7onr wrote

Pretty hard to be Moroccan when he wouldn't be able to communicate with anyone there unless they spoke Dutch or English. Looks to me like his identity is reactionary based on being a minority in a mostly white nation.

Little strange that 50% of their players are born abroad.. the highest % of all teams by far in WC.

I love this! 😆 So here's a lesson to enlighten your ignorant ass: when Ziyech asks for translation when reporters ask him in Arabic, it's because they're speaking MSA (Modern standard Arabic) , not Darija (Moroccan Arabic). MSA is taught at schools in Morocco and you find it in official documents but we don't speak it, we speak Darija our dialect and there are many regions in the country where Amazigh is spoken. He does speak some Darija and he also speaks Amazigh which is the language he grew up with at home since his family is from North east Morocco and of Amazigh origin.

Knitaddicttt t1_j02qx20 wrote

Interestingly enough, he said recently in an interview with LA Marca that he played for Spanish youth team but didn't feel he belonged, it wasn't his place.

1

Knitaddicttt t1_j02re3e wrote

There is nothing strange about that, they're still Moroccans in diaspora with dual nationalities. They love their country and want to represent it internationally. How's it strange?

1

hbaeuerle t1_j02s2od wrote

for one it means another country paid for their education, their training and so on and Morocco reaps the benefits.. plus how "Moroccan" are you if you were not born nor grew up there....

1

Knitaddicttt t1_j02swbg wrote

As if their parents didn't work their asses off for them to afford training in those academies. In his last interview with LA Marca, Hakimi spoke about how his mom worked as a cleaner and his dad as a street vendor and his siblings sacrificed too because his parents prioritized his training. It wasn't easy for them whatsoever nor for their families.

FYI, you don't need to be born in the country to feel Moroccan when the culture and traditions are strongly upheld at home. Moroccans born abroad have an even stronger connection to their roots because they always feel like outsiders in their European communities.

1

Knitaddicttt t1_j02uvrp wrote

Ironically his father is buried in Morocco. They don't even feel Dutch enough to be buried in the country and would rather be be buried home despite the huge expenses that entails.

1

hbaeuerle t1_j03182j wrote

I never implied the parents or siblings or their donkeys did not work their asses off.. if the parents were lazy would that make them less of a good football player? if they feel like outsiders maybe they should move back?

Knitaddicttt t1_j031yev wrote

I'm simply stating that the country cannot take all the credit. For low-income people the road is never paved for you. Simply living in a country with so much infrastructure for the game doesn't mean shit if your parents don't support your training both financially and morally.
