How come players don’t (in all sports) have badass nick names like this anymore? The big unit The big hurt The mailman The glove The admiral The great one

Well I call Payton Jr. "The Mitten." He might not like that, but I'm sure his dad loves it.

haiphee t1_iz0f9tz wrote

They do, they just aren't yet timeless in the same way.

The King, The Slim Reaper, The Joker, The Process are all nicknames for active NBA players.

It’s not surprising. He helped Tom Emanski get back-to-back-to-back AAU National Championships.

Oh man those hitting tapes! Did anyone that used them ever make it anywhere? (Besides crime dog)

Redsoxdragon t1_iyyhbtk wrote

Took way too long. If there wasn't a strike he would've had 500+ home runs and been a sure lock first ballot

hjablowme919 t1_iyyok4g wrote

If he had hit 7 more home runs in his career, he'd have been in a long time ago. He deserves to be there. Good on him.

blacksoxing t1_iz0iz8x wrote

I think this speaks volumes as the WRITERS are the voters….so for them to drag knuckles is pitiful and pathetic

Well deserved. He changed the lives of my friends and I with his swing we all tried to imitate immediately after his very first Braves at bat. I remember my couch yelling at us “what the hell are you doing?!”

MrmmphMrmmph t1_iyyzh9e wrote

I thought this was hilarious even before I considered your sofa yelling at you.

I noticed the mistype as soon as I got a reply notification and came here to correct it. However, after reading your reply I believe it’ll stand as couch, which I am lying on as I read and type this. Good ole couch.

There was a girl in my high school that for a state English exam wrote an entire essay about her most inspirational couch.

There's a player I haven't thought of in ages. Good for him.

But damn, can Lou Whitaker get some love? I don't think he was even on the ballot.

As a Dodgers fan, this guy + the 90's Braves caused me a lot of pain.

SilentStepX t1_iyz1sjh wrote

If it helps, he was a Dodger too in his career.

GrevenQWhite t1_iz0jw2z wrote

As much as Deion Sanders being on Washington at the end helps offset him being on the Cowboys and 49ers.

henrirousseau OP t1_iyyish2 wrote

He is a good example of why I can’t think of a compelling reason why players should have to wait more than two years for the writers to do the right thing before allowing the players committee to vote.

7

Heikks t1_iz09i3e wrote

They should stop giving writers votes and instead have every living hof member do the voting

Kindly-Cap-6636 t1_iyzwlbb wrote

I had the privilege of watching him play in San Diego in the early 90s. What a ball player! One of the most unassuming guys to ever lace up cleats. So happy he’s headed to Cooperstown!

LovinMcJesus t1_iz0f47v wrote

Many folks consider what he did to Baseball his last years was a crime.

−1

ryathal t1_iz0mgw3 wrote

He didn't do anything baseball didn't desperately want. They were perfectly happy to look the other way when it was selling tickets.

6

Dukanduu t1_iz5ytbx wrote

Whatever that crime was, it sure made people watch baseball, compared to now.

Just looking at HOF stuff, who is the one asshole who didn’t vote in Derek Jeter??😂396/397 votes

m_faustus t1_iz0cjat wrote

Fantastic swing. And as much love as I have for Sid Bream beating out Bonds’ throw to home, I wasn’t too sad when Fred replaced him.

Love the Crime Dogg!!! I had seats behind home plate at Jack Murphy stadium, with a direct view down the 1st base line. Crime Dogg jerked a moon shot to the second deck straight down the 1st baseline. I’ll never forget the crack of his bat and how he murdered that pitch. Pretty much had his view. Well deserved HOF inductee.
