I philosophically agree, but this year that would mean the teams to pick from for the last 2 spots are Utah, Kansas State, and Clemson (or an independent like Notre Dame).

Clemson you could make an argument for since they only lost twice (both to non-conference opponents), but to propel a 3-loss team into the 4-team cfp doesn’t seem quite right either if there are 1-loss teams with better overall resumes but were not conference champion.

Automatic bid for P5 winners plus 3 at-large for next best teams (either P5 or group of 5) seems reasonable enough though if it expands to 8.

I've been saying for years if they want a playoff statem, they need to revamp the conferences. 130 teams competing? And only 4 slots. NFL has 32 teams and 12 team playoff?

Either eliminate a large chunk of these schools, have some relegation where the schools and ornconferences move up or down depending on their performance or expand the playoff system.

Of course this will never happen because of money.

NFL is actually 14 teams now. #1 seed has a bye and the other 6 in each conference play to whittle it down to 4.
