Not sure why we need a 12 team playoff, when only 2 teams deserve it.

The year Alabama isn't in the top 4 means we have to expand.

Deathsquad710 t1_iyxe3n8 wrote

Yeah why isn't week 18 in the nfl just the Superbowl, that would be so much more fun.

just57572 t1_iyxv7mb wrote

So let’s watch some power teams whip on some smaller schools, until we ultimately get Georgia and Michigan?

−20

Global_Leaders t1_iyxxkim wrote

Did you just call schools like OSU, Alabama, Clemson, and Tennessee “smaller schools”?

16

just57572 t1_iyxyb75 wrote

No, but who would they be playing? Alabama vs. Washington? No thanks.

xBambiraptorx t1_iyy8mhl wrote

Are you just ignoring that 3/8 of the years of a 4 team playoff were won by a 3 or 4 seed?

9

just57572 t1_iyybgue wrote

Nah. A 4 team playoff is perfect. Sometimes only 2 teams deserve to be there….other years are more interesting.

carribou253 t1_iyxwthh wrote

Im sure theres a lot of people like my that are half interested in college football. So when my team (washington) loses one game i stop watching till the apple cup and have no real interest in the bowl game. More teams make it much more interesting for nfl watchers imo

just57572 t1_iyxze9l wrote

I disagree. Remember Tennessee vs. Georgia? That felt like a playoff game. Or Alabama vs Tennessee? Loser of those games likely misses a playoff spot with only 4. Expanding dilutes the regular season.

carribou253 t1_iyy2r6i wrote

As i said, people like me. Not your college football fans but bringing nfl fans over is what this does. I dont know if this helps or hurts college viewership in the long run or if it makes a difference in the first place.

Also 12 team playoffs brings a better chance of upsets happening. I can see where youre coming from though, just giving my pov. And id like to see a pac 12 team in playoffs lmao

tracerhaha t1_iz1szap wrote

How will they handle it when only three teams remain?

1

carribou253 t1_iz2a5g6 wrote

What? Do you not kniw how a 12 teqm bracket works? There will never be 3 teams remaining.

1

Kain1633 t1_iyyayda wrote

Okay but what about everyone that's not at the top of the sec and then Ohio state and Michigan?

When everyone else is disqualified by a single loss, it makes the majority of the country care less as there's no chance a strong finish is rewarded

6

ChocoboCloud69 t1_iyyhjsy wrote

That's not necessarily true. In fact more teams will be rewarded for having a strong finish by having a shot in the playoffs to pull off some upsets. Perfect examples of teams capable of this would be Utah and South Carolina this year. It may also incentivise big programs to schedule stronger non conference opponents during the regular season if one loss doesn't jeopardize their chances at a championship.

Edit: Read wrong, my bad. Points still stand even if response isn't necessarily contextually relevant though

6

Kain1633 t1_iyyhymd wrote

So we are both pro expanded playoff then

5

just57572 t1_iyyexfc wrote

Good point. I just think that a lot of people are tuning in to these games because they ARE essentially playoff games. If we expand to a 12 team playoff we are missing out on some of what makes CFB great.

−1

saucyjay91 t1_iyyf41s wrote

Or we could have ACTUAL playoff games!

11

just57572 t1_iyymoi9 wrote

Sure. But then you have to wait till the end of the season to get that. Right now most weeks have a game that for all intents and purposes, is a playoff game.

−2

saucyjay91 t1_iyyor89 wrote

Conference championships will mean more if they’re an auto-bid for the playoffs. As we saw this past weekend, didn’t even matter for TCU. KSU would’ve had a shot to play for a natty in a future iteration.

Regular season games will still matter. Yes, they won’t matter quite as much, and as someone that loves college football, that’s a bummer. But as someone who is a fan of a team who would make the final 4 probably never, now I feel my team will have a shot to make an expanded playoff. Anything can happen in a real playoff.

Game on

7

88leo t1_iyyev8h wrote

I would watch a playoff game. I won't bother watching most bowl games between two randoms as the outcome literally doesn't matter. Not sure what you said at all.

6

just57572 t1_iyyfmzm wrote

Certain regular season games have a playoff feel, such as Alabama vs. Tennessee. Winner of that game stays alive for the playoff, and loser is probably going to a bowl game. If we expand to 12 teams we will lose out on that playoff atmosphere during the regular season.

−3

88leo t1_iyyhxx8 wrote

Whether you believe that certain games feels like a playoff game isn't relevant.

9

onfire9123 t1_iz11lab wrote

>That felt like a playoff game

That's the problem. When you lose a playoff game, your season is over. The fans stop caring. Potential revenue drops. Having a playoff game so early in the season is not a good business model for either profits or enjoyability.

2

not_a_droid t1_iyy3kjd wrote

nah, 8 teams is the sweet spot. Top two teams get a first round bye. This is pure money grab, and danger to amateur athletes. I hope they understand sitting out to make money in the nfl is not a slight in their manhood, or whatever

9

ryathal t1_iyyiumt wrote

8 teams would make too much sense.

3

PaulClarkLoadletter t1_iyxvjit wrote

It’s because position is determined by polling. Yeah, giving a “lesser” team a shot could mean an upset but that’s what makes sports great. A wild card race in college football would be a nightmare for establishment conferences like the SEC that depend on having a BIG10 challenger to wail on in the championship game.

3

sumlikeitScott t1_iyyvnjv wrote

Agreed. Just give me 6 conference champions where top 2 get a bye.

Black-H-Si t1_iyyle8h wrote

just57572 t1_iyym8yn wrote

How does that make me a Bama fan? They definitely don’t deserve to be the playoffs.

0

tracerhaha t1_iz1su1f wrote

It should be 14 teams. Since with a 12 team playoff there’s a point where only three teams remain. Who gets the bye and the extra rest?

MickFlaherty t1_iyxkyly wrote

just57572 t1_iyxvd06 wrote

Well, the best teams usually find ways to win even when they have an off day.

−4

MickFlaherty t1_iz122l4 wrote

Friday and Saturday results would seem to disagree with that statement.

1

just57572 t1_iz19ar2 wrote

Ahhh! I meant best teams in the country… which is Michigan and Georgia.

1

MickFlaherty t1_iz1hlz9 wrote

Again, there has never been an upset in college football in championship games. I mean chalk is all that happens.

Play the games. There is crap for inter-conference play to get a real feeling for who is the best. Sure, Georgia and Michigan look really strong this year, but I’d rather see a system with all 5 major conference champions get in and 7 others.

1

just57572 t1_iz1ps7j wrote

I like upsets also, but I don’t think we should add more teams just hoping for chaos. I guarantee that for every upset we have there will be multiple blowouts. And just because an upset happens, it does not mean that one team is better than another.

1

MickFlaherty t1_iz226hh wrote

But you just said that the “best teams find a way to win”.

I’ll take 12 teams and some dud games to give every power 5 conference champion a seat at the table. Was a “worthless” weekend of football when the 4 in the playoff was going to be the same whether Georgia, Michigan or TCU won or lost. Makes the conference championships mean something to be playing for a berth and likely bye.

1

just57572 t1_iz26zt5 wrote

I guess if someone besides Georgia, and Michigan (who found a way to win every game they played) wins the title I will admit defeat.

> Makes the conference championships mean something to be playing for a berth and likely bye.

Conference championships did mean something.
USC had a playoff berth if only they had won. TCU wins their conference championship and there is no doubt they are in, losing three their bid into question.

And like, literally every single other team they played.

28

StunningShock-5 t1_iyxvb0z wrote

All weak teams. They got embarrassed last year vs Georgia because they rode an easy schedule same this year. Probably won’t even beat TCU

−24

rehtulx t1_iyxyt7m wrote

Penn State is #9

StunningShock-5 t1_iyxz5wb wrote

And they played in the big ten too so their record was inflated. Teams like Michigan and Notre Dame play weak schedules and since they were good years ago get ranked higher and then like last year Michigan plays Georgia and it was embarrassing. Now they put two Big ten teams in which is kinda a joke but I guess we get to see another blowout.

−14

bmichael11 t1_iyy4ufs wrote

Maybe Michigan should schedule Austin Peay, Southern, Samford, and UT Martin. Those are top flight programs.

6

StunningShock-5 t1_iyy8hwc wrote

Maybe the should or just put up a fight against Georgia so people actually respect your program. I understand you were pretty good 30 years ago just haven’t done anything since but act like you are Alabama
