Named after the soldiers that stand guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier? I like it! I have been trying to think of a name that sounds decent and applies to the area.

I always wanted them to be the Sentinels because of The Replacements, which is loosely based on Washington's strike-shortened championship season. Get Gene Hackman and Keanu Reeves voiceovers on video packages on game day.

It's honestly insane it didn't happen. They could have Keanu run out in full pads and uniform with the team at the first home game and people would lose their mind

This seems tacky to me at best. Football is a fun sport for entertainment purposes. I don’t know that we should compare them to guardians of the soldiers who were lost but never found in war.

It’s a replacements reference…. You should watch it, it’s great.

Fair point. I just like when teams have names based on their location.

Sounds like something Snyder would do. Cater to vets to distract from his own BS.

I thought Football Team was such an awesome name. I was legit bummed when they didn’t keep it.

Yeah, I really liked it. Made then stand out from all the others, and not just because they suck.

Named after the law enforcement forces sent to round up mutants? I think not.

Only slightly better than being named for men of Gilead who own Handmaids.

You know they probably really wanted to name them the Washington Generals till they realized that's the name of the team the Harlem Globetrotters always play.

Swapping redskins to pigskins was the easiest layup on earth.

I always thought 'Hogs' would've been appropriate. Almost anything is better than Commanders.

Absolutely, best name I have heard. Better trademark it.

Red Wolves or Red Hogs are a LOT better names than the Sentinels. Almost as bad a name as Commanders.

somdude04 t1_iusw6au wrote

Red Wolves had trademark issues. With the history of the name, Red Hogs can be seen as comparing Native Americans to hogs.

−8

phred_666 t1_iusx05l wrote

Can’t imagine the mental gymnastics involved with associating Hogs with Native Americans. The offensive line of Washington during their glory days in the 80’s and 90’s was “The Hogs”. That’s why you see some fans wearing hog noses. It’s a logical name choice based on the team’s past.

JoeSicko t1_iuud1gc wrote

That's why we should have been the DC groundhogs.

Dynas_ t1_iusl586 wrote

Just rename it back to the Redskins. It was never racist to begin with. That was a all a PR move.

mikesaninjakillr t1_iusmcmr wrote

It is, was, and will always be racist.

Anything but Commanders, which is so seemingly intentionally poorly thought out that it seems like a troll against the fans. So every player is in command? Like they all fly in from their global deployments on Sundays?

Hell just go back to Football Team while we sort it out.

They risked losing the trademark rights because its illegal to trademark racial slurs. No way they'd risk continued court challenges especially when their owner is now under federal investigation.

In your own article it says:

>petitioners withdrew for further litigation now that the legal issue has become moot due to a decision in another case which found the relevant portion of the trademark law to be an unconstitutional infringement on freedom of speech.
