Orbit exactly on the opposite side of the sun.

That’s a really interesting concept but that’s too close and an alternate space ship or telescope could communicate with it - no?

Thank you!

Wouldn't work. There are tons of probes and satellites around the solar system that could be used to relay a message.

Itd take a long time or lots of fuel to do. I recommend using KSP with realism mods to if want believable enough numbers and such for orbital burns

And destroy all long-range communication devices in the colony.

Most direct solution is to yeet them out of the solar system on a path that continually increases the distance between them and Earth. I think?

Edit: I can't read I guess so if they have to stay in the SS, you'd have to put them in a shadow somehow to minimize line of sight with Earth I guess.

StoykoYovchev OP t1_j4gjpc9 wrote

Well lets say it's OK if the colony is outside the SS, it's a generational ship traveling to Proxima or Sirius. Wouldn't they be able to communicate just like we are in contact with the Voyager probes?

Round-trip communication will be at least 8 years, which is basically useless other than for news or maybe information about new technology.

A base on Europa or Enceladus built under the ice. There are some mission concepts that use nuclear reactors to gradually melt ice underneath the spacecraft (which freezes above the craft) and the craft will gradually descend closer to the hypothesized subsurface ocean. I think it would be really hard to send a signal through several miles of ice, but as far as a colony goes, there aren't really any other power sources than what you bring with you, so the colony would kind of be screwed when their uranium ran out.

Yeah, but I'll be concerned for the colonists. That low gravity there is really bugging me.

If it's anyway fiction you could assume nuclear fusion instead of fission and to use hydrogen from the ice itself

Numerous military commanders throughout history have landed a force with ships, and then destroyed the ships to eliminate any option of retreat. You might not prevent people centuries down the line from rebuilding communications equipment or spacecraft to go back to Earth, but you could make it so there's nothing there to go back to...

redstercoolpanda t1_j4gfkau wrote

well theoretically you could shoot them to Pluto because of the distance and the real lack of ability to slow down once you get there. meaning any ships from earth would just fly past it too quickly for any meaningful convosation. And make sure you don't send anyone with any type of rocket building skills and you'll probably have an independent colony for a fair while.

Deep space orbit. Something like Halleys Comet. Though "not contacting Earth" would be very difficult out to the nearest star as radiowaves can always phone home.

Your need it powered by fission or fusion.

I assume that this is either for a story or you're a supervillain looking to commit a very complicated crime. Either way, I support the idea.

If space travel is cheap and common, then it would be very difficult to stop other travellers from dropping by. Similarly, if Earth wanted to make a concerted effort to communicate with the colony, then Earth could probably communicate. So you've probably got to look at avoiding communication both ways.

First step: launch a vessel that can convert an asteroid to a low emissions stealth base. Obfuscate the launch with something like a false flight plan.

Second step: destroy all radio technology, delete all information relating to radio technology from the records. No radar, no radio, everything is hardwired.
