There is a dark pipe-shaped cloud to lower right of center, it's called, well, the Pipe Nebula. It also forms the back leg of what's called the Dark Horse--its body, bent front leg and head extend to the upper right. See it? Also, the center of the Milky Way galaxy lies just to the lower left of the bowl of the Pipe, in the middle of the dark cloud.

I must really be missing something as I’m looking at it and zooming in and it just looks to me like wallpaper with little sparkly gems on it!

Right. Which phone?!

We see the Pipe Nebula as the beak of the Kiwi, turn it 90’ to the right.

This is the important question. :)

It’s actually easier than one might think, you just need to increase exposure time to something like 30 seconds, and make sure your phone sits completely still for that duration

How?! Like, what phone and what settings? Any post editing?
drolldinger OP t1_irmykq0 wrote
iPhone 14. No editing. Held my phone very still and turned exposure to 10 seconds.

You can tell it was shot with an iphone because apples post processing makes everything a blurry mess on a closer look

My iPhone has never, ever gotten that clear of a picture of the sky. Maybe they’re a camera settings wizard?! Lol

Not being in a city helps, taking a photo of the milky way is not that difficult.
