I just gave this a go and it works. Basic pinhole camera with two sheets of paper. Make a pinhole in one. Hold the other sheet in its shade.
It's a small image but you can see the eclipse outline.

The last eclipse, I made a cereal box viewer. It worked exceptionally well and the only cost was the cereal box, a small amount of tape, a tiny bit of aluminum foil. Even ignoring that you're getting cereal to eat, this viewer only costs about $3.
