ChatGPT is made and hosted by a single company. it's not open source so it will break on its own under the strain of all the users who need ai tools

Trying to break ChatGPT is the way that you figure out what it can and cannot do. You find where it fails and publicize that, and then OpenAI can fix it.
However, the number of people trying to break it is dwarfed by the number of people trying to use it for other things, so it's not like this is the cause of it being busy. Just wait till there is a subscription model (which I'm guessing is coming very soon) and then you can use it all you want for productive things.
Right now, it's an openly available toy and you don't get to decide how we play with it.
