I'm a neuroscience undergrad and am going into psychedelic research. Psychedelics like Psilocybin open up generalized critical periods of plasticity. These can be used to "rewire" intrusive thoughts or ruminating thoughts. They seem to tap into a mechanism of intrinsic growth that has a goal state leading to a homogeneous energy landscape in the brain. This is all backed up with empirical evidence from research.
I'm happy to talk to you about this in more detail.
Editing your brain sounds very difficult. Maybe making your brain more malleable and learning new habits might be easier.
You can already do this
No implant required
Your brain is an impressive programmable object
It will take ASI

Yea what we have now isn’t that great. If we work extremely hard we might manage to mostly overcome the problem, but most people understandably just aren’t capable of making that huge of a long-term determined effort to change their own self.
That’s why I want tech to do the job and do it for real. It’s frustrating knowing my problem is a few inches above my eyes and yet it rules over my life so much. I wanna dig it out and throw it in the trash

Well I’m happy for you. I did therapy for years and I did experience that chest pain ease from it but fundamentally I was unchanged. And it cost a tonne of money which makes me question how ethical the practice really is. I would rather the world stop reinforcing our existing habits and instead accelerate our reliance on tech which has proven to be far more capable than human hands and human minds manually doing stuff. By going back to therapy I feel like I would be validating the world as it is which is not what I want to do. We could automate so many jobs tomorrow if we had the will to. And we could invent brain editing tech too if we really wanted to. Too many people finding satisfaction in the way things are is why we can’t have the wonders of tomorrow today
That would probably involve brain damage... Literally killing the cells that make up neural networks.
What would be more probable and already exists, to an extent, is the refinement of technology and practices to prioritize some neural pathways over others through the development of replacement habits. The practices and technology would ideally speed up the process of developing those replacement habits.
The only technology I know of related to this is Transcranial stimulation (either tcds or TMS) https://radiolab.org/episodes/9-volt-nirvana
The practices might include more focused and regimented/controlled/supported (via apps, social leverage, lab environments, etc) types of therapy (specifically CBT), meditation, and general development of emotional intelligence skills.
Wrote a little definitely there, my bad, just kind of my writing style - just take it all as a semi-infirmed opinion based on a little formal and informal education (both of which are quite outdated). Feel free to correct or contradict if I made any mistakes or you've read/learned something else
I think once we have full dive vr, 99% of humans will be comfortable with the idea of death. That is one way the singularity will program humans, imagine going from “I’m going to die someday” to “Ik I’m going to die someday but atleast, I know where I’m going”. That’s what our brains neural networks will switch to in a sense, we will finally know we have a parachute no matter what happens. It doesn’t matter if you venture out to the stars and die in the wilderness or in a terrestrial civilization, you’ll just respawn in a data center somewhere on Earth. “Data is the new oil”. Our minds contain so much data which is why many bci companies are waiting though the FDA to allow drilling your skull for oi- data so it can feed intellect to its AGI system 100000X fold. Privacy will be an imaginary thing on a hypothetical level. A fairly large percentage of thoughts with all 5 senses are live streamed online 24/7. Ofc there will be bugs and glitches yet it won’t tax your joy because you’ll feel like you are on a perc with no comedown 24/7 thanks to biotech/bci. The colab of those two technologies will massage our brains to the point of us becoming the ultimate consumer whore. Editing aka reprogramming your brain will need to recquire fdvr to “train” you just like how we train LLMs but time tables will be different for everyone depending on hardware and software capabilities. FDVR will give you “muscle memory” on any task at hand, it’ll just be like AR to us with instructions laid out in a exceedingly simple fashion. All our genetic code is reprogrammable even if it’s in the brain. Ofc, AI could solve the puzzle and theoretically give you the body/brain you want. I know many people think they want to remain human but I honestly think most people won’t give a greater shit about their health once fdvr hits the streets especially knowing they are immortal and they can do “ANYTHING THEY WANT”. It’s going to make every current street drug feel worthless. People will be happier but it will seem like society is sleeping a lot more since they are sitting/lying down dreaming in the metaverse.
With your cynicism in hand, would you get an implant?
Why wait? You can do it now. You need to be willing and conscious.
Not until we get BCIs that can write.
Damn, a lot of threads have been getting deleted in this subreddit recently.
