Like when Todd from Breaking Bad had his own little psycho starship commander adventure in Black Mirror?
The episode seemed to imply they were conscious though, not really mindless NPCs (at least that's how I took it, up to debate).
Controversial opinion maybe, but I feel people would degenerate fast in an environment like that.
Yes.
Maybe you will have more free time to make friends. Or an algorithm could predict whos going to match you perfectly. Even if you dont find real friends after that ai could genérate a digital friend for you. So yes
Why wait for that to happen to solve it?
I am waiting for it to solve all my problems
It's a fools dream to expect something magic to come out of nowhere and fix all your problems. The best assumption to make is to assume you have to fix your own problems. That's the only way to be happy and to have control over your own life. If the singularity comes, that's good. If it comes fast, better. If it arrives in 50 years, that's a long time in misery, and if it comes in 500 years, you have wasted your life hoping something else would fix it.
Although I generally agree in the general sense but not in the absolute sense. But most of this sub is like this. All of this future won't happen unless these AI improve, same with vr and more. I dont believe it will take 50 years. Sometime by mid 2040's. By 2029 it should be clear what version of the future is correct.
worst mindset ever
Yes but it’ll happen before then.
There’s already apps like Replica that is basically a chat bot that can also be sexual.
Only a matter of time before it gets to human level conversations.
And then it’ll be implemented for AR glasses. So you could have a virtual AI friend/romantic partner that you can see and talk to. It would scan all your data and personalize the avatar to your liking. Or you can customize it yourself.
Of course haptic gear can also be connected, so you could touch your virtual avatar or have sex or do whatever the fuck you wanna do with them.
Eventually there will be physical humanoid robots, think westworld, that you can physically interact with. I think that’s still very far away, but we’ll see.
Alternatively, technology like neurolink could someday fix those feelings if loneliness as well. That’s also very far away.
So short term, you’ll have the perfect AI friend/girlfriend in VR/AR. It’ll probably be good enough that people want to use it within 5-10 years.
For the singularity, it’ll probably come up with infinite solutions to your loneliness. Probably just pop you into full dive vr with your ideal AI friends/relationships.
Yes we must look at what we have available now to make sensible predictions about the future.
Replica is utter garbage. Doesn't remember two messages before, and is generally very unimpressive. Character.AI is better in every single way, it is way more convincing, remembers a lot from your convos, many times it simulates a human's curiosity and unpredictability correctly.
However, it is still very much clear that you're speaking with an AI, sometimes they'll say stuff that makes no sense AND it's easily tricked by the classic phrases like "What colour was Napoleon's white horse?" answer: "I don't know much about Napoleon so I can't answer". On top of that, the developers implemented very strict censorship so even if the model is the absolute best at simulating NSFW, its mouth is literally forced shut from the ouside.
But our friend is asking for a cure for loneliness, not a quick wank. For that, a couple of prompting tricks will have me have fun with Hu Tao's toes in seconds. But for true companionship we require much more.
For that, the AI needs to remember everything we tell it and NEVER forget it, or at least be smart enough to know what stuff is important and must be remembered. This may be a decade away for all we know. Also, the human mind works in funny ways, many times the mere scarcity and difficulty of finding love gives value to the love we find. It is entirely possible that no matter how advanced AI gets, many people may never fall for it, because they know if they ever do or say the wrong thing they can just hit the reset button and start again, that alone may make them look at AI partners as worthless and just another sex toy.
That said, looking at how fast the sector is moving, a convincing AI partner might be ready in 10 years.

Edit: and we mustn't forget that speech recognition and quickness to answer must be improved upon a LOT. Right now the best speech recognition still needs at least one or two seconds to catch up. We need it to be near instant. And the bot must be able to respond quickly and to have a credible human like voice complete with emotions, though great strides were achieved on these things lately.
As for hardware, the timeline seems way more stretched. The closest thing we have is indeed VR, but for realistic VR we need the tech to be good in both the software, the window by which you see the world (screen), and the hardware must be powerful enough.
The software is there, just look at how good Unreal engine 5 is. The hardware isn't there yet but will probably be in 5 gens or so. But the screen is way more behind, for truly good VR you're looking at 8k resolution per eye *at least* AND either OLED or MicroLED for perfect blacks, both technologies which have still a long way to go. Workable screens might need much more than 10 years to arrive.
And lastly, haptic tech can only do so much. The best we have today is auto strokers and force feedback gloves but that can only carry the illusion for so long. Who knows if we'll ever be able to invent something that actually feels like a real thing. It may take decades.
Sexbots suffer from our robotics tech being limited. The only robot which moves with any semblance of fluidity is Atlas but it's clearly intended for military purposes and its expensive af, and loud af. To get a robot that moves like a human and doesn't sound like a textile factory it will take decades.
As for Neuralink, exposing yourself to literal infections to the brain in order to coom will never not be a dumb idea for me, no matter the fact that it may potentially take a needle for every neuron to produce a satisfactory result and that it's decades away anyway.
Ever considered playing Wow or something similar?
I found it to be a pretty decent substitute for a big part of my life, as engaged guilds can have pretty much chatting.
Also, the latest expansion that dropped just 3ish weeks ago really is the bomb.
This is good advice. Particularly legacy versions of the game or older mmos. They are so social and friend oriented that I actually am very thankful they existed when they did
Probably in several ways. Completely realistic robots or NPCs in full dive VR might work great. If not there will probably be ways to alter your appearance or even your mental state and personality that could help lonely people.
If we develop tech that allows us to physically interact with light then yes but right now it's all just pixels on a screen. So it's like interacting with a ghost.
I think it's funny that I want singularity to achieve the exact opposite.
I want to have a spaceship and go as far away from civilization as possible. I never want to meet another conscious person ever again if I had the choice.

Use character ai. The best chatbot avalible to use right now. Made by the same people that made lamda.
One way or another, most likely. When the true singularity takes place our lives will be completely transformed and imo the human species will either be wiped off the face of the earth or have everything dramatically enhanced very quickly. There might be a middle ground but in my opinion there's a good chance it'll be the former.
Yeah get ready for the companions like in Blade Runner
lol all these replies imagining better video game AI or or sex bots... bruh. If humans survive the singularity, it will probably involve transferring our biological intelligence onto some kind of synthetic substrate. That kind of technology require massive improvements to our understanding of neuroscience. So if you are open to changing, we may literally be able to "fix" the aspects of your biochemistry preventing you from easily connecting to other people. In a scenario where people are free to modify their own personalities (in a controlled fashion), it's hard to say if individual identity will continue to have any meaning. Borrowing an idea from Alan Watts, we might even find that life is more interesting and worthwhile when we are encumbered with various character flaws, and actually opt out of such improvement technologies. Given enough time in cyber-utopia, it's quite possible we will eventually choose to experience various forms of suffering such as loneliness.
To get even more crazy, I believe there's a fair chance that we've already had the singularity, then chosen to go back and live through this traumatic (but undeniably very interesting) pre-singularity time period.
Why are you lonely?
I don't think AI will fill that hole. I posted this today to someone asking to be as popular as Cristiano Ronaldo. Even people at that level of success suffer from loneliness.
How about Lewis Hamilton. Famous F1 racer, knighted by the Prince of Wales, most F1 wins....
"Sir Lewis Carl Davidson Hamilton MBE HonFREng is a British racing driver currently competing in Formula One for Mercedes. In Formula One, Hamilton has won a joint-record seven World Drivers' Championship titles, and holds the records for the most wins, pole positions, and podium finishes, among others."
Here's what he posts on instagram.

Keep sending messages in a bottle and you'll find your place in the world.
You’ll be more lonely but not care

If i could be on the deck of my favorite starship and interact constantly with major and random NPC's I wouldn't care if people showed up or not.
