The Matrix is actually the most interesting story to me, because it was never really clear if the AI had any subjectivity or not. I always took the essence of why Neo (the One aka consciousness) is special is because he is more then just a biological machine, he has a soul unlike any machine. In other words Consciousness transcends the physical world - AI can never be anything but a mechanistic product of the physical. That's why the matrix as this simulation that everybody is trapped in is a fantastic metaphor, because that's very much like the "real world"

Ghost in the shell and Her is two other amazing movies but the plot of 1's and 0's becoming conscious is thin. But IF AI becomes conscious Her is a very likely scenario I think. With almost unlimited information and energy, Love and transcendence is the only way to go for consciousness. I would almost say that if AI doesn't expand and transcends like Her, then it is proof that it is not conscious.

I re watched the matrix trilogy last week for the first time in 12 years. I'm in IT now and it's the first time the plot of the matrix made sense to me. Obviously there are layers of symbolism, but no one ever talks about the literal interpretation of the plot.

The One is a special human that contains the password to reset the matrix. This also grants him access to dev permissions in the matrix, which is why he has special powers. He also must have an organic version of wifi, which is why he can run self destruct commands on machines in the real world. To obligate the One to do a reset, the machines obliterate the human settlement. The One must then travel to the source code repository where the recovery console is accessed. Smith was defeated because neo was attached to the source code repository and once Smith cloned neo, the source did a delete all on Smith and then rebooted the matrix.
