This would be very cool for me. I’m blind so cant build super well in game, but can play decently well thanks to mods

Sounds like an ideal partner for XCompWiz's Mystcraft, as long as Microsoft doesn't insist on wasting the potential for their own perceived profit (or more likely lack of imagination).

I was thinking today about AI and game development and how it will develop over the next few years.

  1. write an rough outline of a zone and some features, ask the AI to expand it. Edit the result as required, then get the AI to expand further on specific features (ie, not a 'big mountain' but a 'big mountain, it's lower slopes covered in pine and ash, rising to the treeline after which bare slopes with snow and ice) and so on until you have a description you are happy with

  2. Apply text to image, edit as needed

  3. Image to video. I haven't seen 'image to 3d playable space' but I'm pretty sure it's not far away.

4-6) repeat the above but for NPC's and monsters

This all seems really doable or close to doable and will massively reduce the amount of time and work needed to create a playable zone for a game.

This should have two consequences. The big studios are going to be producing a lot more content and also downsizing, and the small studios and independents will be producing a lot more games.

This. This is the start of AI-assisted modding. It is going to be glorious: imagine having a great idea for a whole complex mod, typing a paragraph and have it being generated for you? It will revolutionize gaming.

This is one that I'm really hoping for and could see becoming a reality within just a few years. Can't wait to see what amazing worlds can be created when we can have people creating what they're passionate about without the barriers of million dollar budget requirements and corporate politics getting in the way!

Sure, there are some YouTube videos of people testing out the accessibility mods for Minecraft that you can watch if you want to visually see how it looks, but basically camera controls are done via the use of your numb pad. So the default looking position is north for example, and if you hit the six key on your number pad which would basically be east, you would then be looking north east and if you push it again you would be looking east, etc. so it adds that sort of segmented camera control and the screen reader of choice will announce which direction you’re facing so you can essentially reach any block like you normally would be able to with a mouse and keyboard this way. Like if I’m chopping a tree down, I would hit the down key one time so that I would be facing the bottom block of the tree, and then I would hit the up arrow to hit the center block, etc. There is also fall detection where it will scan ahead of you and if it detects a fall that’s greater than about 10 blocks or so, then it will warn you. There’s also an auto lock feature where certain entities in the game whether that be chests or monsters, will make this kind of beeping noise. If you hits the assigned key to lock onto the target when you hear that beeping noise, it will do as it states and lock you onto the target to help you find things easier. So if I’m ever fighting them off it’s fairly easy because it’s basically aim bot. I could go on and on, but to give you the best idea of how this works check out a video on YouTube about it it’s actually pretty darn fascinating how well they got this game to work with a screen reader.

The future of NPCs specifically is going to be wild. The designers will only need a book of world lore and a background bio for each character, and the NPCs will be able to have rich, meaningful, unscripted conversations with the player.

On the other hand, I can envision myself becoming like the parents of the 90s, fretting over the influence of violent videogames and modern technology. For example, when GTA6 comes out and someone mods it to have AI-powered NPCs who literally beg and plead for their lives, are we sure that 14 year olds mowing them down with virtual AR15s won't be psychologically impacted in some way?

It also occurred to me that online games with a small userbase will probably 'fluff the numbers' with AI bot players who are indistinguishable from human players, the same way social networks and dating apps use bots to create the impression of a bustling community.

I think end goal here is to generate full games by AI (hopefully by 2030). Imagine creating a game just by prompts and then fine tuning. I'm sure it'll still take teams and many man hours, though.

All of these outcomes are highly likely, and you didn't even mention the swamp of personalised porn that is looming on the horizon. Like most tech, AI is a double edged sword and it will undoubtedly cause a lot of issues.

I think the author has a limited view of what they are seeing.

I don’t think the point of microsoft adding ai to minecraft is for a gameplay feature, i think it’s to enable game creators to build worlds using text prompts, and minecraft was the proof of concept.

instead of searching a 3D asset library you can just prompt the ai to build your level and assets.

That’s a very interesting way to play a game! I hope you get to play in full dive soon and experience a better game than anyone with total vision has ever played before- and, of course the cherry on top would be to truly correct your sight and you can see in every type of way people today cannot, with their silly un-upgraded sight. Take care :)
