I read the first little bit and the jist seemed to be that in people who experience SAD and have similar circadian rhythms, the ones who experience the depression the most are the ones who experience interruptions in their sleep. I'm not sure I interpreted it right though so I would appreciate someone else chiming in on the matter as well.

This might be off-topic, but I started taking a Nobiletin supplement to help improve my Circadian Rhythm. It's still early days but I wonder if supplements might be helpful in treating these kinds of disorders.

This makes sense - depression and anxiety are extremely common in any sleep disorder, and disrupting your circadian rhythm seasonally wouldn't be an exception.
There's a subreddit for delayed sleep phase disorder, and people there treat it with multi-hour exposure to specific light immediately on waking and blocking light before sleeping and they seem to share the idea you've presented and see benefit upon alleviating it.

Do they think this new research will reveal that Christmas trees and lights might help such depression?
I do not think this research is very new.
