This press release article and post title seem to slightly misstate what the new findings are from this study. It’s not new information that cell division has a lot of checkpoints. CDKs and their regulation of cell division have been known for some time. However, this study showed that there’s another checkpoint mechanism that is independently regulated from the CDKs. Very interesting finding, just a misleading title to this post and the press release.

This is a nice potential application of cell physiology, and I look forward to seeing what (if anything) eventually comes of it. But every new answer always raises even more new questions.

How effectively can this be targeted specifically to the cancer cells, rather than simply affecting all cells? (And does that matter, particularly if other affected cells are slower reproducers?)

And are there alternate or redundant (backup) mechanisms that may be normally dormant and may eventually regain function?

I love reading about basic science; so much can unfold from a single discovery!
