The US NW has a dozen distinctly different climate zones, so which one? And how much water will you provide?

We’ve so depleted soils with traditional agriculture that we’ve basically left the soil sick. Pests, disease, and water retention are related to plant health and immunity, which is directly linked to soil quality. Nitrogen fixing plants are nature’s way of healing the soil. Climate change is the fever and these are the antibodies.

I’ve had tremendous success with making compost in my yard. I use coffee grounds, orange peels and any weeds or yard waste. I’m slowly filling it in with native plants. I let clover grow where it will. I’m letting some “weeds” grow in patches like sweet grass and yarrow.
I’ve lived in two homes now with yards that were essentially dead. I suspect the prior owners abused the yards with chemical fertilizers, weed killers and pesticides. It takes a year or two to heal the soil but oh my god, is it with it. Soil is made of rotting things. I don’t know how we forgot this.

Lupin is booming in iceland and it is a nitrogen-fixing plant. As the lupin dies though, it'll create better soil for native species.

The issue this article raises is adaptability to aridity, which comes from plants having to "breathe" less.

watching the indigenous trees beginning to struggle here in the pacific NW of USA, I’ve been wondering what we should plant.
