its called permafrost because its been frozen for a very long time, usually the ice we see is just seasonal but that ice does not usually melt, now it does because the earth is getting warmer

The funny this is I just read a study about how the polar ice caps are melting but are also absorbing more carbon then they thought and much more carbon then the forests are
