No way you can determine this in AEL. Especially using a DiD methodology.

I think their data could be confused by the concurrent rise in smartphone ownership and apps like Venmo and Cashapp making cash movements in/out of bank accounts no longer as relevant. How much "cash" enters the Venmo/Cashapp environments and just stays there? You wouldn't see as much banking activity around cash and bank transfers because now whole economies exist outside of those institutions, inside untracked apps.

AEL is for very short publications.
DiD is the methodology they use, which requires some pretty intricate statistical relationships.

In US legal stores, you still have to use cash to purchase, as cannabis businesses are locked out of banking. Assuming consumption is unchanged, this is likely mostly due to decreasing prices. As legalization proceeds, the risk premium is coming out of cannabis prices, even for black market providers, who have to compete with the legal sources. Ounces that you might have paid $200 for ten years ago on the black market are now $60-100 in the stores.

In North Carolina, not a legal state, stores are selling weed as THCA hemp. The 2018 farm bill legalized hemp products with less than .3% delta 9 THC. Weed usually has about 1-3 % delta 9 but that isn't really what's getting you high. Marijuana has high levels of THCA which turns into delta 9 when burned and that is what is getting you high. So growers have bred plants with high thcA and low delta 9. It is the greatest loophole ever. I buy real weed from the store with my credit card in North Carolina.

In Canada we have eTransfers which are directly moving funds from one bank account to another, via email or text messages. It's all done within the bank apps, so yeah I imagine it's fully tracked.
As a Canadian I'm completely unaware of any 3rd party apps that move money around without tracking. Stuff like that typically ends up being done via crypto.
eTransfers are ubiquitous for money, there's zero competition.

Maybe, but it could just be that they don’t want to pay the surcharge fee I’ve encountered when using my card to pay at the dispensary, if they even take it. Some here in Vegas are cash only.

Cash only here in Colorado too. They always have an ATM in the building but you have to hand over cash.
I've been to one where you can pay with a card by handing them the card, but it will still be run as an ATM transaction. They have you enter your PIN on a PIN pad, round it up to the nearest $20, and give you change in cash even though you paid with a card. And there's still ATM fees. It was a weird round-about way of letting customers pay with a card while getting around the banking ban.
Far more often it's just an ordinary ATM sitting there.

It’s a relevant point as to how important this research is to have any significant amount of money spent on especially if this is the only thing they looked at. Although confirming “obvious” beliefs is an important part of science.
But what struck me most about your comment is it’s hilarious you think a team of 2 social scientists relying on public grants are likely to be spending “millions”.

You know you won't get screwed over from legal sources. Not that badly at least, and would have recourses available.
Probably people who have friends who still grow buy "black market" often, but then there's not as much selection.
If only I got an euro every time I read a another confirmation of weed that we've known for ages. It's slow work, convincing people they've just been lied to about weed. (And am not saying there are no negatives.)
