My family is planning on driving from RVA to NoVa on Christmas morning and I’m trying to predict what the road conditions might be like. I grew up in the north so I’m not really worried but I seem to be the only one. It won’t have rained for a few days but it’ll still be pretty cold. We were hoping to get on the road between 8-9 am. Any predictions? Thanks! (I know we can only guess at this point but I’m a planner!)

I just wanted to make a quick point to your post, while you may have grown up in the north, the drivers here did not. You could be sitting at a stop sign and get rear ended pretty easily. Please be cautious when driving in inclement weather around here, people often either treat it with too much respect, or they double their average miles per hour.

Good luck in your travels hope you have a happy holiday

The sun is already peaking out where I am and there is no more rain forecast. I would not expect any icy conditions on Sunday, two days from now.

Driving on Christmas morning? You'll pretty much have the highway to yourself.

Roads should be fine. I'll be heading south on 95 that day.

My father in law was born and raised in New England and loves talking about how people "down here" don't know how to drive in the snow (despite having lived here for over 30 years now, guess what bro you are "people down here") so it was a really special day last winter when I got to pull him out of a ditch

I mean it'll be cold so do the standard checks on your car before you leave, but as far as conditions go the roads, especially 95, should be totally fine. I wouldn't expect much traffic on Christmas day but 95N beyond Fredericksburg is basically Russian roulette.

I literally learned to drive on two inches of ice, having grown up in Chicago. I try my best to never drive here when it is icy.

I do love the occasional trip back home in the winter, though. Driving through a snowstorm on the highway with people who do know how to do it is one of my life's small pleasures!
