We just put our little one down for bed, it's the first Christmas Eve, at four years old, that she's ABOUT SANTA. Spent ten min putting out cookies, milk and iced tea out for Santa and a few carrots and a bowl of water for the reindeer.

Enjoying the wood stove, some homegrown, and a flan from my family's dinner earlier.

Mine is 3. She's excited, but it wasn't until a well meaning grocery clerk at Kroger asked if she was setting out milk and cookies, did she get Really excited. So I wasn't planning to do that yet, but we made a batch of chocolate chip cookies before I headed to work tonight. I'm just glad to be off, tips were decent, and we got out on time. Dad and I are having a late dinner, cleaning up and watching RPDR, then being Santa and putting everything out by the tree. Edit: we also have some home grown we got as a gift!

15

Mother-Ad-8142 t1_j1k4ngj wrote

... to use up some squirrel.

You can't just slide that in there like that. Like legit squirrel? If so, what does it taste like? Is there a lot of meat on it? Where do you get squirrel? The trees?

We need answers.

26

geneb0322 t1_j1k9bzf wrote

I find the taste and texture to be very reminiscent of turkey or dark chicken. After I pick out the bones, there's about 3-4 ounces of meat on each squirrel. I get them from my yard or the woods behind my house. They are stupidly over-populated out here so the meat is a side effect of culling them so that they aren't so destructive.

13

catmmy50 t1_j1kimb2 wrote

You ever have spares. My husband would love it

4

geneb0322 t1_j1kjxqw wrote

Yeah, I've got at least 7 or 8 more in the freezer right now. I periodically cull them throughout the year so I usually have at least a few at any given time.

1

Inglonias t1_j1ktnvt wrote

Why do you have that?

1

Kamesod t1_j1kw9xq wrote

For their squirrel stew. The main ingredient in squirrel stew is the squirrel

5

Also for squirrel tacos. My wife is more partial to those whereas I prefer the stew.

2

fluufhead t1_j1kvjez wrote

Genuine question - how are squirrels destructive?

& What is your weapon against them, pellet gun? Do they make a good stock or broth?

2

geneb0322 t1_j1kwsdp wrote

My primary issue with them is that they eat most of the produce out of our garden (especially tomatoes; the second there's any red on them at all, they take them). They will also nest in the house if they can make a way in, though that has only happened once (to my knowledge) so far.

In moderation squirrels aren't bad at all. I am quite fond of them, actually. Around my house, though, their population was outrageous. To put it into perspective, I have taken around 50 just out of my yard over the last 2 years and there are still at least a dozen just directly around my house, without needing to even go into the woods or the other yards in the neighborhood. I am fine with this population, though, as they are no longer a nuisance so I only cull to keep the population in check anymore.

Edit: Sorry, forgot to answer your other questions. Yeah, I use a pellet gun to take them. They make a surprisingly gelatinous stock but I havent tasted it, honestly. I would expect it to be similar to chicken stock, though, judging by the smell and color. Turns to jello when you refrigerate it.

2

fluufhead t1_j1kwznc wrote

Now that you mention it they do that to my tomatoes too. They just come take one bite then leave them.

2

geneb0322 t1_j1kxmzo wrote

Yep, that's exactly what they did with mine. Nothing would deter them so I decided to cull them. I have a personal guideline that I will use as much as I can from anything I kill so we began eating them. My wife was making leather from the skins as well but she stopped because there's just not that much we can do with it.

3

Charlesinrichmond t1_j1kzlpu wrote
